I think the genre these days is serve yourself, I mean my son has 8000 songs in his ipod, and he just listens to whatever suits him at any given time, some of the groups he tells me about Ive never heard of.

He does keep me enlightened on things going on in his college group, they are listening to some form of tech dance music these days, I think someone mentioned it on here in a post, I dont know the name, hes played it for me and its just another form of disco to me.

Bob, I think a lot of it is our ages, when I grew up in the 70s music was such a large part of my life, the first VH album came out and me and my guitar playing buddies sitting around trying to figure it all out, plus listening to music was a shared experience, I remember we would all go to concerts together, plan it weeks in advance, these days, my kids will just look on youtube at groups in concert, before they even think of going.

When I was a teenager we hung out in parking lots with someones car stereo blasting, these days all the kids have thier own headsets listening to whatever they want to and instead of talking they just listen to music and text each other, its just a whole different world.

Heres a crazy thought, some one is going to come up with a box that you hook up to yourself and it just makes a soundtrack for you personally, whatever your mood is it just adjust to it. Sounds crazy, but Im sure there is something in the works along this line, makes us live musicians obsolete.

I sometimes think my ancient iPod has some gremlins in it.

I usually put it on shuffle all and there are times when it'll play stuff that all fits together-- e.g. I'll pick some more laid-back stuff and it'll play a bunch of laid back stuff. Other times I pick something like Disturbed and it'll play all harder rock/metal stuff.

If I'm not mistaken, online sites like Pandora will let you pick an artist and then it'll play stuff that is similar.

"His [Clifford's] requirements for a musical friend are way to stringent for most normal people."

As I said, to fully understand these "requirements", you need to understand that I want to do something more valueable than just jam or play music. I'm looking for a few guy friends around my age to call my brothers.

Also what does the term "normal person" mean in this day and age? Everybody is different. Everybody has different music tastes, and tons of different physical and mental disabilities. You've got gay, straight and bi individuals. And the list goes on and on.

Also the term "normal" is subjective. One person's normal might be strange to another person.

Its already been done.. Back in the 80's... I bought a custom cassette tape that way in a record store that had the booth set up. It was like 70 cents a song ...You'd throw on some headphones, do a menu search and record it into the cassette. I got in about 15 songs that way... all specially picked.

What you need is some theme music. All of us got to have our own theme music.

for me it's several different things to include even the fiddle part from the Last of the Mohicans sound track (that's for when I'm feeling froggy) and 'Last of the Wilds' from NightWish. That sort of celtic folk metal thing always stirs my blood.

Just think - youi walk into a room or a building, and your theme starts playing. Everyone stops and thinks, "Dude...must be somebody important!" And you are!

When politicians walk in they should play, "Gimme Money!"

in modern music, dance is the #1 driver of popularity.
now that media distribution is 100x easier than in the past, dance music will be 1000x more prevalent;
given that most cultures are given to dancing as a form of socialization.
Muslim countries being the least likely to contribute to popular music due to the fact that they prefer single sex activities to be promoted and sanctioned. (also contributing to a large underground homosexual culture)
The markets are not as narrow as in the past, so comprehensive labels are
not suitable.

Adolescent/yuppy materialism will be a dominate theme for years to come, simply due to the fact that there are far more people striving for comfort than are comfortable.
