Well when it comes to sluts, I recommend a condom. :P

Ok IMHO...Hammers necessarily require good attack and sustain capability of the fret board/strings and the amp settings. Though I am not a shredder at all, I can prove my claim with an acoustic guitar if i plug it into an amp. (Using a transducer /pickup ) ... If the amp sounds too dirty, you get a hammer that sounds dirty. If the amp is too clean, you get a squeaky clean hammer... On my acoustic, there is a natural resonance (especially if the strings are new. ) that lasts about a second...The rest relies on the amp to hold and sustain...

It is also my understanding that Tubed amps can sound grittier than fully solid state amps

Yeah. I hammer a lot. The trick to a clean note is to hit as close behind the fret as possible and don't slack off the pressure until you are leaving that note.

I don't hammer a lot, but when I do ... I tend to flick slightly as well.

Stay rocking my friends. 8)

That and practice Trills.
Use the pick for your start note, then keep the hammer on / pull off going until your hand tires out.
It builds left hand strength, and actually speed to too, just from doing the endurance thing.
