Love the sax! I think that sax was the inspiration for many guitar solos and licks. Look how McLaughlin and Santana adopted Coltrane's "A Love Supreme". I also love the sax solo in King Crimson's "Starless".

Yes Claude,

That is why I started this thread. I am a guitar player but I want to talk to non guitar players to broaden my horizons.

I like jazz by the way. Who are you into? Can you recommend some listening for me?

I read a blurb by Ritchie Blackmore and he said guitarists should listen to and try to learn sax pieces because the average saxophonist can play much better then the average guitarist.

I truley believe this.

claude wrote:It's funny, I'm a jazz nut who is just trying to learn to play sax so I'm used to sites where everyone and their dog plays tenor sax. Seeing so many guitarists here is kinda weird for me, and I don't have a clue about the music that is brought up here either. I look at checking in here as an expanding of horizons exercise :D

Glad to see you here. One thing I love about this place is it's never ending ability to teach you something. You'd be surprised what pops up here.

I agree with that, in the short time I have been here I have learned a lot. It is like a resource center at times, I refer back to here sometimes for information.

By the way, I have played a piece on guitar from saxophone. It is called "Take Five" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

I think maybe there is so many guitarist out there because it is one of the more common instrumental stepping stones towards other musically creative outlets.

Steve,

I think most people go into playing guitar with dilusions of grandeour and because it's a commonly seen instrument they think it is easy.

Greetings to all
I must confess to being new to this forum. In fact this is my second post ever on the net .I posted on another thread earlier today and i believe i,m becoming addicted.I reacently opened an account on BandMix with the intent of reforming a part time band. For the last five years I have been building a new house and working a full time job.Up untill about a year ago I have been playing in a four piece blues rock band .I am now jonesin to play and could use some gig cash.I have been recently browsing your discussions and listening to your music and got "sucked in" .
Pertaining to the subject at hand,I am an o'l rocker who has been playing keyboards, singing, blowin harmonica, and a bit of sax 'off and on'since the mid sixties. It has been my good fortune to have played with many excellent guitar players, drummers, bass players, ect. It's good to see so many young players creating new music and older players still giging.Even better is the communication between the generations.

Hey Howlin.

Yea man that is what it's all about. Jump in. The water is great. Help us old guys straighten out some of these kids. LOL

I started this thread because I figured there were a bunch of cats out there who really were just lerking because the forums are usually guitar oriented chats and they steer clear. Heck with that. There are so many great players out there who are not guitarists who could bring alot to the table and everyone could learn from. I want to hear from them, hopefully learn from them and make sure they are getting their props.

So are you looking to do a blues thing going forward?

What are you going to be playing in the band if you get something going. I would go with sax dude. Guitarists as mentioned are a dime a dozen. Sax players on the other hand.......

Good luck in your search and I will look forward to rappin with you.

GOOD guitarist are not a dime a dozen.
Based on what i've been listening to on your profiles,if you or jimmydanger or that young" canadian steve "happend to be in eastern pennsylvania round newyears,WE'D BE JAMMIN!
Afterwhich in all probability you'd say..."Howlin',Keep on wailin the blues burnin the keys and blowin that honer...but next time we send for Claude to blow sax!!!"
I trust i'll hook up with soom good players in my local area.
My previous bass player (who doubles as my son Ryan)has tentitivly commited his services.
I have written my share of songs over the years.in addition to which I may add classic blues and some good ol'beerjoint rockers.

I'm primarily a guitar player but also play sax, a little keyboards (but usually not in public) and several other instruments. Bass, drums, learning flute, and everything in the high school band room. I started guitar at age 5 though, and had no idea what grandeur was, much less a delusion... :D

The guitar at that time was just something to make noise, my uncle caught me banging on his and told me to play it right. I said I didn't know how, he said he'd teach me. He did. It's been an addiction ever since, for over 45 years now...I have a feeling my family might put one in my coffin with me when I go...

By the way, I have played a piece on guitar from saxophone. It is called "Take Five" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

Great song, I played it with the high school jazz band, and was disappointed when the alto sax player got the solo. (I played baritone and did solos too on it) always liked playing it though, mainly because of the oddball 5/4 time signature.

I saw the same Ritchie Blackmore quote and have been using it for years myself, it's great advice for guitar players to copy sax solos. The main thing about sax to me is you can get it so smooth and melodic, and if you can do that on guitar you're accomplishing something. I also advise beginners to never, ever pass up a chance to play some guitar with a better player. You'll have to work for it and you'll always learn something. I've seen way too many times young guys hear me in a music store or pawn shop, put the guitar down and won't touch it again, afraid I'd embarrass them. If they say anything about it I tell them to ALWAYS grab a guitar and play.

Since I did it long ago, I've also always advised all musicians to learn different instruments. It helped me a lot, I got out of high school in 73 and still listen to a song and wonder if I could stick a decent sax part in there. (I have an alto now, and a tenor that sounds horrible or did until the pads went south) I suck on keyboards, tendon to the ring finger of my left hand was injured at about age 12 and I have limited use of it, especially palm down for keyboards, so I have to use only my thumb and pinkie, the other fingers all require that other fingers move. That means if I go for a key with my middle finger, the ring finger hits one too..somtimes I can keep it from happening, and use the index or ring fingers, but it's not easy. What's more of a problem is that once it's down I can't pick that finger back up... But I still try to pick up and learn any instrument I can get my hands on.

Off topic, but I just thought of this again and decided to ask.

Wegman:

Is your avatar a picture of you? Mine is, it's me onstage with a recent band and I've always wondered about a couple of other folks on here, in particular yours because it resembles my sister's ex husband. (except that he didn't know which end of a guitar went up)

Paleopete, I agree, musicians should learn different instruments. I love the song "Take Five," that is my jazz side, lol. I like a lot of jazz things, especially on piano.

I think I am going to learn piano and bass guitar (Do this at the same time, that will not bother me, I can handle that). Then, after I have progressed somewhat in those two instruments, start working on the "oud."

I never have expressed interest in any wind instruments. I like the sound of some of them, but I am not really into learning them. I will stick with my string instruments, lol.

Peace out, GuitarAnatomy.

Hey thanks all for the warm welcome.

Wegman wrote:Yes Claude,

Oh boy, a better question might be who am I not into.

I always try to avoid recommending jazz unless I have some idea where a person is coming from musically, but I'll post some general thoughts. If a person likes the more easy-listening aspects of jazz I might recommend starting with the standard starting point (this is almost like a knee-jerk recommendation) Miles' Kind of Blue or for something a little less obvious maybe Hank Mobley's Soul Station or Grant Green's Idle Moments (great one for guitarists, btw). If a person is someone who listens to a lot of heavy duty rock and roll or punk (or whatever they're calling these things these days) they might get bored with some of those so I might suggest FME's cuts or maybe Fred Anderson's CD with Hamid Drake, but it's difficult to say what would work without knowing a person. Really if you're getting into more current stuff there is so much to choose from I would recommend getting an eMusic account and trying out some different things for a relatively low price.
