i definitely have a better idea of where to find other musicians but i'm more worried about who these people are than how they can play...there's a certain feel that me and my drummer try to set, i feel like it'd be tough to just change our feel with someone knew, does it just come down to getting out there giving it a go?

Hey, I thought I'd post an update since I feel like it could be relevant should anyone stumble across this thread with the same question, and also to let the folks who gave me tips know how it's going.

So I haven't been able to get out much, BUT, I have been spending time on the internet(go figure).

I've currently lined up two auditions, and am waiting to hear back from a few other folks I've contacted about setting up and audition. We'll see how it pays off.

Craigslist is a pretty good resource! I know it seems sketch, but it's where I've found the most promise(at least in terms of searching online, we'll see how it goes)

I just posted an ad there recently, and an ad on Musolist, as well. The Musolist ad was placed... maybe a month ago, and I just recently got a response.

It would seem the internet could be a viable resource for connecting with folks, but you also have to be proactive, and consistent.

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice. Now to get off the computer and out of the house. X_X

Ill agree with the idea of puttin a guitar on your back, a bass on your shoulder or a mic in your pocket. And walking around like some sort of a messiah bring the joy of music to those around you,
Drum sticks get caught in ya belt.

Jojo_XY wrote:Hello there folks! I'm a 23 recent college graduate who lives near Richmond VA, and has always had a bit of a problem finding my niche. I sing and play keyboard/piano, and I'd absolutely love to get into industrial/alt rock, symphonic rock, and electronic music, but when it comes to finding other musicians to collaborate with I seem to be at a loss.

Musically, I'm pretty open minded, but definitely have interests that stray from most of the musicians I have collaborated with in the past. Maybe I'm difficult to work with or hard to please, but it never really works out to be anything more than a temporary fit. Richmond Virginia has a pretty strong death-metal scene, but I quickly learned that I have little interest in that (Plus, My screams don't sound so great).

SO, how have you done it? How have you met other musicians? How can you find a niche/ potential band partners? Should I be seeking out specific venues? Use the internet? Should I move somewhere else that offers more opportunities that interest me? Should I stop being so stubborn and try types of music that I'm not that interested in making?

What have your experiences been?

I've having similar issues. I'm 28 years old and I play keyboard and piano, and I currently play covers of pop and soft rock songs, which is not popular amongst musicians in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Most people in my area are more interested in playing blues, classic rock, jazz and indie music, and there's hardly any love for the keyboard, even at Open Mics. check for yourself, the Baton Rouge musician section of Craigslist and Batonrougerocks.com.

Another thing that makes this harder is my lack of knowledge of more appropriate places in my area to find these guys, and the fact that I'm legally blind, and the fact that I'm more of a daytime kind of guy, and not the kind of guy who likes to go to bars and clubs.

I've been on this search since 2007, and when soemone did respond to my ad, he was usually someone who was already pursuing a career in music or to earger to get out and perform or someone who was already committed to several bands/projects of his own. Sometimes I would reach someone who was the direct opposite of that, like someone who just picked up his guitar or keyboard and just started learning.

I need some help in this search myself. Can someone help me find a way to get back into this search? Keep in mind that this is just a hobby and that I'm not in a rush to get out and perform. I'm simply looking for some good friends who share my passion for pop and soft rock music, and who play guitar or keyboard well, and who just want to have fun hanging out together.

Finding people who just want to jam at home and like the same kind of music as yourself is tough. I'd say don't worry about it if the person is a relative beginner and you just want to play at home. Maybe contact a few local independent music lesson schools. usually these folks are more than willing to jam in order to progress in their abilities.

Are you responding to the original poster, or are you responding to my post? Whether or not you are responding to my post, I don't know what's out there in terms of music schools. It would be a lot more helpful if I could talk to a few guys who like more of the music I'm into and talk with them about some places they've tried.

But again, keep in mind that even though I'm looking for someone who's more advanced than me. this is still just an intimate friendship based project, where there is no rush to get out and perform, and where we can take our time working on songs, and allow time to do other activities like play video games, or have coffee together, or possibly meet other general friends and go see a movie or something.

Yes, I was responding to you. Finding a 'best buddy' who can also be a music partner - and is more advanced than you musically ... man, you are looking for a miracle! It's not every day when a Paul and John meet up.

Thanks for trying, sir, but I really don't know what's out there. If I did know of some music teachers to contact, I would've done that instead of posting up flyers at the few music stores in my area that I know of, and trying to find them on inappropriate sites like Craigslist and Baton Rouge Rocks.

You can find local music schools by googling, and just keep looking - persistence of vision.

Here's what came up when I typed in "Baton Rouge music schools.":

https://www.google.com/#hl=en&sugexp=ck ... 24&bih=595

The results are too generalized, and the schools are probably a bit too serious. I just want to contact a few music teachers in my area and find out if they have any advanced students who like playing pop and soft rock music. Also keep in mind that these pro-minded musicians I'm looking for, may not be attending any music schools because they have already leanred what they need to learn. Also keep in mind that I want to avoid reaching guys who are blindly following pop trends because it's cool and those who speak out against pop and soft rock music, like those on Baton Rouge Rocks and Craigslist, who are doing what's popular in the BR music scene.

I find Google works best for something much more simpler, for example, if you already know the lyrics to part of a song, but you can't remember the song name itself. What I'm looking for requires me to get experential knowledge from guys around my age who have similar tastes in music and who are not an active part of the BR music scene.

Music schools may have classes tailored to adults learnign to play later in life - these are the folks most likely wanting to just jam for fun. Far fewer 'more capable' players are going to want to just jam.

Again! Please, pay more attention. I am NOT just looking to jam. I want to find individual guys who I can become CLOSE friends with and work on some pop and soft rock covers together that span the 70s to today, and actually learn some new skills, so I'm going to need to reach these "more capable" players, and not the ones at music schools which are probably not going to have the talent and the skills I'm looking for or the passion for light rock. Factor in that keyboard players are extremely hard to come by here in Baton Rouge. There is too much love for the guitar here and too much love for alternative indie music here, and not enough love for mainstream pop and soft rock.

Also consider that I want to do this purely as friends, with no pressure or deadlines to meet. Consider that I want to allow time to do other activities as well (possibly on the same day) like play video games, or have coffee together or hang out with some general friends. If something DOES happen later on after working on some covers, and working on some originals, that's fine. But I want to reach someone who's a bit higher up than me and can show me how to do mixing and recording and can show me how to properly play around with electronic textures.

I'm looking for someone like this guy:

http://batonrouge.craigslist.org/muc/2994062833.html

...except that instead he needs to be a guy who does what that guy does as a hobby and NOT as his job.

The point is that I don't want to reach anybody who is less knowledgeabl;e and less skilled than me. I don't want to settle for second best.

Everybody I've talked to so far seems to think that music schools are the answer, when I don't want to waste time taking classes, not to mention that I need to talk to more guys in Baton Rouge who like more of the music I enjoy and find out what they've tried and found similar success.

And also considering where I stand with my music knowledge and current skills, I'm one of these "more capable" musicians you speak of.
