Go to any clubs that have bands - ask the players and you'll often find they know somebody who is putting something together.

Same with music stores - hit them all. Read any boards they have, talk to the salesmen. Leave a card.

Get some music posted so folks can see what you do.

The players I call on to perform with me always,
turn out to be friends, or I won't use them ( and I will
run the unfriendly's off). Look to your friends and family,
there's where you will find your bandmates, thru them.

I've just started my search, but going through the same thing. Advertise on CraigsList, start a reverbnation site and search for all 'local' people, fan and message them.
I've realized that I've only been looking for a couple of months, this could take a long time.

It's not easy here in NYC... Music tast has change here.

I guess it depends on how serious you are about playing, if you are serious go to places that people are actually playing and get to know them, they know the people that play.

Theres a town east of my hometown and a guy was complaining about what you are saying, he said there is no where to play, when I was marketing my band I had found almost 50 places that had live music, most I wasnt interested in, he didnt understand what i was saying, thought he could sit on his ass at home, post here and there that he was serious about , but he never went and even checked out any places with music, he just wasnt serious enough.

If your serious get out there and mingle with folks that are doing it.

I ran into my old friend the other day, he was still bitching about it, this is almost 5 years after I gave him a list of live music joints within 30 minutes of his house, he said he went to a couple but didnt like em for one reason or the other, hes not serious is all I can see in it, cause thru my discovery of those places and meeting musician I get people getting in touch out of the blue all the time looking for a guitar player, you are only get as much out of it, as you are willing to put into it.

Yep...You have to go venue hopping and basically make friends with EVERYBODY.. But even that wont guarantee success.. I ran into a couple of knuckle-heads who I thought were interested in working with me on my project... But they wound up being flakes about it.

I am inclined to believe that only 1 out of 100 people you meet would ever actually be on board with what you are doing/vice versa.

So I have this theory.. Do your one-man shows at all the venues that will have you... and keep on... until somebody steps up and asks you about getting in...

I thought that all musicians were flaky in one way or another. It appears to be in our nature. I have guys come up to me and tell me they want to play on one of my tracks. They go out of their way to tell me that... and then they never come up with anything but excuses as to why they just can't seem to get away.

Some might get offended by my usage of the words "all" "flaky" & "musicians "in the same sentence. You could always take this test to find out. Go stand in front of the mirror and think of all the little things in your life that are screwed up one way or another. If the guy in the mirror is agreeing then your F)((&^% up like the rest of us. When I look back at my life I have to wonder how I made it this far. I screwed up everything that could be screwed up at one time or another. But I think that all the experiences shape your music more than most people would think.

I Must admit I have been a flake from time to time... I chalk that up to being confronted with some lofty demands... For example, I was recently asked to jump in on a battle of the band's contest...

Now... everybody who knows me, will know that I am no more prepared to pull that off than to fly to the moon... Its not that I do not believe I could do it... rather, its because the entry requires a 'band'... I still have not solved that problem... I'm two members shy of doing anything great with a band... As such, I had to flake out and decline on the offer...

BUT! I came about this opportunity in the first place, because I was out there wind-bagging my solo material... and he, being a professional musician, was impressed enough to talk to me later about it. I would say that qualify's as progress toward finding a band eventually...(Aka my name is getting out there)

True enough, JW, but the ones I want to play with already have bands or don't want to do acoustic (it seems)! If I had the vocal chops, I'd go the solo route, but since I'm looking for someone to take at least 50% of the vocal duties off my throat, it makes it difficult. If I've had no luck by the end of the summer, I'll start doing a few of the local open mics/jams to see what happens but so far what I have seen is people who want to play/jam, but not commit/rehearse.

GM, just go see other solo acts and ask to join them, same thing man.

I'm no professional but I'm pretty damn serious about my music.

And I always check my E-Mail.

More often than not that is where my next gig comes from.

Finding compatible people for a music project is difficult and time consuming.

Be tenacious ...

Just got contacted by a local Beatles tribute band. Not sure it's the route I want to go with, but worth an audition, I guess!

You will never know what other doors it could open for you Mike.
