No matter how good it is, I don't like music yelling at me to get my attention. If it is good, I'll focus in on it. If not, beating me over the head with decibels won't change my opinion.

POwerful makes you a god-like musician... Loud just makes you a f**k idiot and an asshole.

I wouldn't go so far as to make them Godlike.
That seems to be the strange threshold that separates loud from a different generation.

Remember I said these guys were from the seventies.
Thats how much different they were. It was about volume, but also being able to control it.

I guess I can't explain it. It is not for everyone. Just trying share a very old r&rollers point of view.

VOLUME: The amount of something within a spectrum of acceptable containment. 10 Oz of water poured into an 8 Oz glass is 2 oz of wasted water... and doesn't do anybody any good, nor does it change the quality of the water or the glass that holds it.

VOLUME : The amount of decibels within the spectrum of acceptable hearing 10Db of sound poured into closet of listeners is many DB wasted and it does not speak for the quality of the music.

Any musician who confuses raising or lowering VOLUME for the effect of Crescendo/ Decrescendo is a f**k moron.. VOLUME is the physics we use, to ensure our presentation/musical expression can be clearly heard within the contained boundaries...at hand.

Persuasion , Compulsory movement and inspiration from a piece of music , where crescendo results in a gradual increase or decrease of volume (as emphasis) is a demonstration of spirited authorship and performance.

If you RAISE VOLUME because you think that's the 'cool' thing to do...or becuse you use that gesture to express "in-your-face obstinance to the audience, then you SUCK DICK as a musician. Period!

I guess everyone here has missed the point...
When you get that knock on the door in the middle of the night and someone from our government drags you out screaming....

I'm just gonna keep quiet.

NO WAY!

There is a proper volume - if you can attain it that's great -if it needs to be louder than that happy place then you need a sound man for sure.

I've gone both ways.

1) Each player has a certain volume they must attain to be heard - and that means as loud as the drummer.
2) Additional considerations - the guitar player may want to play a bit louder so harmonics pop quicker and one gets a lighter touch for the fast licks.
3) repeat for other players in the group
4) A primary consideration, as FBob noted, is that vocals should be over it all. The vocals make the overall sound of a band. We might never have heard of guitarist Lesley West if he wasn't also a bad ass singer.

once you balance those factors you know what your volume should be. The problem of course that you often have to find it over again since many venues have different sound characteristics.

I have been nursing a secret suspician that all the volume naysayers are trying to mask a deep seated desire to turn it up to 11! 8)

CRANK IT UP! If you want to play R&R you have to CRANK IT UP!
I just re-put it up. 15 year old song that was just a song writing exercise.

Fixed the lyrics and have a CRANKING drummer coming in to finally play it.

Thats all I can say.

I love meaningful loud R&R. All you old guys,,,,,, Start playing acoustic. What do you want me to tell you. That doesn't mean you DON'T PLAY GREAT!!! Especially you Slack. We all play different , some of us are songwriters, some only want to play.

The key word here is meaningful. Loud for the sake of being loud is just wrong. That is the problem I have with so much headbanging heavy metal. All it is,,, is loud. However, we had a heavy metal guy come through here 6 months ago and he was fabulous. I wish I could remember his name.

That is what makes playing so interesting. Everyone is so different.
Sorry for bringing up a musical post on general chat.
