I hear you... but I'm an old dog. I don't WANT no fancy feast!
New is not always better. Hell even many of today's guitars are made using the blueprints of old. It comes down to personal taste and preference.
But the mods have gotten much better. If nothing else they're pretty cool toys to mess around with.
That's what all this is anyway.

To your point, I think how our hands move is how our style (or lack thereof) is identifed.

The guitar makes a difference too. One night some of us got together and had six different guitars uncluding LP, Strat, Tele, PRS, LP studio.

We started wtih my strat through an amp preset to make a high energy type of sound. Then without changing any amp settings we ran through all the guitars and pickup combinations, and sure enough - the difference in sounds were striking.

Mostly good to my taste but all recognizedly different sounds.

While I play a strat most of the time I will admit freely that I think the consistantly best combination is Marshal / Les Paul. I can get an almost as good sound out of my gear with the added benefit that my instrument suits me perfectlly. Never quite comfortable on a Gibson neck.

I agree the guitar does make a difference,
I would have loved to been around for that
experiment. Think I'll try it with some guitars,
and maybe 2 or 3 different kind of amps. Soon

Does a guitar make a bad sound in a competent
players hand?

I'm just the opposite Mr T, my hand likes the LP,
especially for solo work, but I like Strats to, it's
easier to play up on the neck with a Strat, just not
as thick of sound.
