See here is the thing. You said you don't want to be a full time musician but what if you put your band together, do a few originals and next thing you know you have thousands of people screaming for more more more?

Hmm... I would have to quit it anyhow. I would have to let the band I made do it without me, which if the songs that made us big are mine, then they are screwed unless they can write like me or better. But, that is something I would have to live with. See, the problem is, I do not want that as my future. I want to be a doctor. That is my goal and I will not stray from that path. There are many reasons I want to go into medicine, so getting my degree is of the utmost importance to me.

Do not think I am saying it would not bother me to quit a band if it wanted to go too far, but, it is something I would live with. Despite all the fame and fortune that would come along with being a big rock star, it is not the life I want. So, do what you will with all that, those are my reasons. *Shrug*

I'm sorry guys...I'm not trying to induce hatred. I'm really really having so much fun with this band right now just doing covers... We pack the place...get all the perks... get treated like "rock stars" and could have our pick of the ladies again but we all love our wives and children. As said before... this started out just as fun for a couple of guys getting together once a week, havin a few beers and jamming.... turns out, everyone in the band are definitely pretty good musicians and this now snoballed into a couple of gigs here and there. We all have our own day jobs, we have other hobbies, mine personally is racing sportbikes... and noone here is planning on making it "big". ...but... People are definitely enjoying our shows and we all are pinching ourselves, laughing cause this was just supposed to be a Saturday nite poker game with the guys...but it turned out to be a helluva lot more than we expected... Yup...People still freak when they hear me doin' Maiden, Halen, Ozzy, Alice in Chains, Aerosmith, etc... to a tee... and in between I throw in my own solo's here and there as well as my drummer...so all in all... doing covers has definitely made my otherwise boring life exciting again... It's like jamming and getting paid for it as well as all the "perks" you mentioned....

I do write.... I have quite a few of my tunes on paper... eventually when we finally get real serious, the singer will put lyrics to them.... I'm by no means in any rush!

Your not inciting hatered. Far from. Were just discussing something we feel strongley about. You from your angle and me from mine.

I wish you guys the best and I am glad to hear it is going better then expected. That is really cool. I guess that is what I was trying to say. You never know where anything will lead if you don't give it a chance.

Whether you play covers or originals I would think we all want to sound that best we can. Thats why we call ourselves musicians. Lately Ive been checking out a lot of bands, most of them are cover players and let me tell you there are some awesome musicians out there playing Sweet Home Alabama every night.

Good Luck, I hope some of you cover players get a chance to cover one of my songs someday, and likewise you original guys I hope I get a chance to cover some of your songs someday.

I have always had the idea that starting the audience off with a couple covers then breaking into the originals was a good idea, you know to catch their interest first. But after reading this I think my idealogy has changed...

Nothing against anyone no matter what they do though.

Covers are fun, but I would rather do my own stuff and hope people like it.

I have been trying for longer then I care to admit.

I actually just quit a very promising band because I wanted to write material rather then play the rest of their tunes and the covers they wanted to round out the set.

I feel that strongly.

In the last 2 years I turned down 4 - 5 band offers for the same reason.
The more time I spend learning other guys music, the less time I have to learn my own . . .

We have written 3 originals in the last 2 weeks..

Why work on covers when it's flowing!

Likewise, if you do put together your own band and are looking for new members, be kind to them. One thing I've noticed is when trying to work with people, they are overly protective of their music and abilities, and not very flexible when working with a new person or their best friend.

Aint that the truth. It's because they already have their egoes invested in what they have developed, and hope to get the "new kid(s)" on board with it, instead of seeing what the new kids can actually bring to the table to morph their music in positive ways.

Yes, you have to be patient with people, especially at first.. There's a certain level of comfort that should be there before anyone can expect someone to be able to open up and play.. Impatience and criticism can hinder anyones ability in a hurry I think.

It's no so much of me wanting to do my thing but of us doing our thing, as opposed to me doing your thing.

I find this attitude is more with musicians who are not confident or are not accomplished. I like throwing an idea out and it getting mauled because if I am playing with accomplished players it will be a hundred times better then I ever could have done on my own.

Also regardless of skill level not everyone gels with everyone. So, no matter how much you caudle or re assure a player it isn't ever going to work. IMO the accomplished people know right away what works or not, with whom and why or why not.

Lastly when you start reaching the more pro levels there is no hand holding, kindness or patience. You either do the job or you don't and if you don't do the job it's on to the next guy because there are 100 of them waiting to replace you.

I told a producer who contacted me about a side project of his that Aerosmith is a not a style I am good at playing and that I am not into playing cover tunes. His phone calls ceased after that statement because he found some one who could/would.
