I went to a church, answering a "lead singer" ad, and somehow I end up as leader of their whole band. Bass player, drummer, etc. (I thought bass players were supposed to be hard to find.) All of these guys have been playing for a long time, too, experience is always nice. The bass player has been playing for 42 years. (I'm 28 years old)

I know I'm not that good a singer, or piano/organ player, which is what I'll be playing at this church, they don't even know I play sax as far as I can tell. Our first practice is Tuesday, so I might be jumping to conclusions, but I feel pretty good about this. I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth too hard. So I get another regular, paying church under my belt?

If I didn't believe in God before, I would now.

(And no, I'm not doing it for the money, but I won't turn it down, either.)

I've never felt like I had "my own" band. Invariably when I'm in a band with somebody who thinks it's "their own" band I find myself on "my own."

I've always done most of the work in nearly every band I've been in - I write the tunes, produce the recordings, book the shows, host the rehearsals, own the PA, etc - so I usually think of them as "my" bands. The one thing I did give up was artistic control - I gave up on trying to get musicians play what I hear in my head. Hire good people and trust them is my motto now, and I'm happier for it.

Just roll with it, nothing negative about the entire situation.

I.e. This might be what you were looking for, you just didn't know it.

The practice went well, I think. It was kinda weird for me, I'm not used to people looking at me for leadership, most groups I'm in are basically just a bunch of guys jamming together. (I don't know how they stay together, come to think of it...) Why these guys with all this experience would take direction from me is odd, but there you go.

I appreciate the advice you guys gave here, too. I've never tried to "lead" a group, so I pretty much told them to just play however they wanted, anyway. The whole "don't assume it's 'your band'" idea that I got from your posts seems like a good idea. I'll keep that in mind, and I'll see how this thing goes.

(Maybe I thought it was all good, but everybody else hated it!)

Guy just play, don't think about it too much.

You'll ruin your vibe.. just do what you do and don't over analyze it.

Yes... That`s a miracle. But I don`t think that you`re not
I'm not that good a singer, or piano/organ player
cuz your band`s members wouldn`t follow you in such a case.
Just... Good luck!

It's not odd at all to me. An established rhythm group has a new man on keys / vocals. He is basically the front man. He knows his strengths and weaknesses.
Whom better to lead?

Too bad your not in our area. Love to see what you could do with some of our heavy tunes. Keys would be a benefit as well with the praise and worship side of the coin.
