Haley, this will sound crazy but someone told me that prune juice helps you hands, or arthritis issues, of course you will be squinting all the time like your in the middle of one of those metal solos all the time!

Getting back to your original post Jeff,,, Rings are the # one reason for severe finger damage. Wedding rings in particular are known for causing tremendous pain.

Well the finger is doing a lot better. I took the ring off Monday. I started to play guitar again yesterday! The swelling and stiffness has gone down and I am getting the strength back. It is not 100% yet but I feel like I am getting back to normal! You guys have given me a lot of good advise and I thank you ALL! I have NEVER done any stretching and have taken the health of my hands and fingers for granted all these years. I am getting older now and this was a real wake up call! :D

After years of playing and your wrists and fingers pop and crack a lot , change your hand position to over the neck instead of under the neck since that's a weird position for your wrist bent anyway and you dont do anything else that way but play guitar. Less resistance because no palm drag along the neck. (good for the guy with warts too as you were saying above. )
Another trick is using white deodorant on finger tips, just swipe your finegrs across it , don't cake them. you'd be surprised what that will do for your fretting hand in movement on the strings with minimal resistance. It makes th strings /fingers like glass with no resistance.

upside down guitar - hard to get used to - like it was meant to be that way when you get used to it.

Guitar players should never ware rings of any kind,
rings are the quickest way to lose a finger in almost any type of accident.
I have been married 29 years and have never worn a wedding ring for that reason.
Once you reach the age of 50 you really need to concentrate on playing those things your hands want to play.
you're not young enough anymore to enforce physical discipline on your fingers.
any pain at all in your hands you should take advile and TRY to not play or take it very easy on your fingers when you do.
advile works wonders but is bad for you over time, so they say.

under no circumstances should booze be used as a painkiller or mental lubricant for playing, alcohol is a solvent it dries up the natural lubrication in your joints and will lead to arthritis or carpel tunnel or god knows what.

Jeff you are in fact still young even though your over 50, but now is the time to savor and preserve what you have learned, not the time for telling your hands that they are 16 again and pain is gain,
at 50 pain is not gain it is a warning.

JCP61, very well said and I agree 110% pain is a warning. Believe me when I say I am heeding the warning!

Well - ok . . .
