After nearly a year of preparation and two very long sessions (I got home at 2am Monday and 3am last night!) we finally nailed an excellent version of King Crimson's "Red"! Mike (drums) and I played a basic melody track first, then I overdubbed a rhythm track and a bass line. I still need to go back and redo the melody track and fix some bass flubs but overall it is killer! I'm going on 3 hours of sleep but it was totally worth it. God I love music!

Alright Jimmy, so let me ask your going
to do this whole tune in 6 or 7 tracks? I'm
not familiar with the song, but will fly over
to utube and watch (I always like to watch
those early takes of songs). Seems I've been
trying to get more than 6 or 7 tracks, just to use
more equipment, and to try to make a 10 pc
band sound, but I'm nowhere close.

Just wondered about how many tracks and why,
I've took a little bit of JW's advice and turned down
some tracks, and then layed 3 rhythm guitar tracks,
and thinking about laying down two lead tracks, plus
bass and keys, and 4 vocal tracks.

got to get down to my equipment pile and start recording
the boss is hollering,

Technically the drums take about 12 tracks but we can count them as one for argument's sake. There will be three guitar tracks, one of which is the original melody guide track. I'm planning on 2 bass tracks simply because there is a note that can't be played on the bass in standard tuning; not sure how Wetton got that originally but I plan on tuning the G string up to A so I can reach it. There are no vocals so that's pretty much it. Much luck to you in your recordings, the more you do the better you get.

You know I will. Actually I'm itching just to post the board mix from last night but I'd rather wait until I get it done and mixed. Definitely the hardest song I've ever recorded.

Post it we won't hold you to it! We know the final mix will be better!

I went to utube and listened to it,
about 1969 version I think, that
was this morning. Cool song, while
I consider myself to have a great
rock n' roll knowledge, it seems my
whole life I keep getting showed stuff
from artists in the 1965 to 75 range
that I've never heard, here's another one.
That's why I always have new music to
listen to.

Actually "Red" was from KC's album of the same name from 1974. If you were listening to 1969 stuff it was more likely from their first album "In The Court of the Crimson King".

You got that right John! My drummer is a perfectionist and made me realize I've had it easy for way too long lol!

OK "Red" is posted on my profile. The levels are very low so you'll need to crank the volume. The bass line needs a lot of fixing, it was recorded at 2am lol.
