In the war we carried pistols or an extra grenade for a very special reason - that plus the deals we made with our close friends. There are wounds you don't want to survive.

I've wondered about the theology of that. one could debate it endlessly but I won't because I don't have a firm scriptural foundation to build a case on for either side.

I don't however, recommend it.

In a lot of ways the intentional taking of one's life is not so much different than smoking cigarettes, drinking and driving, or any number of other not so intelligent behaviors we persist in.

You do understand, that the whole debate over cause for relief is moot, once we realize there is no scriptural foundation (That I am aware of) that suggests war is justifiable. Hence no wounds are justifiable, rendering arguments for suicide near impossible to adopt.
When a person takes a gun to his own head, maybe what he's really trying to do is to just kill his brain...
