everybody likes to get paid.

let's say, I'm a shop owner,
Well if I'm going to pay, I'm going to audition, If I audition, 1 out of 100 might get a chance at a paycheck.
I mean you can express the general feeling that people ought to pay, but it dose beg the question ought to pay for what?
and if passing the audition is no issue for you or your band , what are you doing at a coffee shop or tea house anyway?

I think free venues and offers of shelf space would probably appeal to most players who don't fit in anywhere in particular.

a 50/50 deal seems a lot but honestly 50% of 20 bucks isn't going to hurt anyone, and there ain't no tea room who can support a rock band anyway.

I think Bob has it right.

If you play for free, they will want to take full advantage of you.

1x=maybe
2x= no

After the first one, it's negotiation time.

(Pay us or trade us, coach but don't you fing dare try to make us ride the bench...cause you will be sorry) lol

I figure that if I am 'asked' by a venue to play on their stage, its not unreasonable to expect I already passed their audition...hence not unreasonable for me to expect a market wage... in the form of a nice check or cash at the end of the night.

On The Other hand, If I ask them, to 'let me play" on their stage ... Then I expect to get in line for the audition...

Now here's the punchline... Good Club Owners NEVER 'have' to audition...They already know who the 'GOOD' acts are, they already know how much they cost, and they understand that's the price of success for the venue to build its name. Therefore, no audition necessary.
