We play in local or regional touring bands. We write music. If you are lucky you get to go into a REAL studio and record!
You have a REAL career!Possibly family or maybe a REAL life!
I do all the above and write, record, my own music. If you go to my site and it say's original next to a song it means I am the only person that has ANYTHING to do with that recording! Being such a busy person sometimes after recording a song it seems like when I listen to my own music it is as if I am listening as a total stranger. It is really like an out of body experience.

Doe's this EVER happen to you?

To be honest, since I don't really make recordings for money, and I simply do it to express myself, I find that most of the time they are general ideas. A starting point, really. I usually end up dissecting what I did in the production process, so that I can learn more about it.

A lot of my recorded works that I have done at home are not finished. I guess I just don't have any counterpoint to work from, but never-the-less, it seems every piece of work I do I am proud of putting my name on. It is almost like I have a storyline of my progress from total ignorance of production, to whatever I am now. lol.

I suppose success comes different for everyone.

As far as having a real life, I don't think that being in a studio is a requirement, and in fact I have seen it destroy some. One of the reasons why I don't want to play for a living anymore, is because of the instability involved.

I started this project in AZ, and went to the studio....pro recordings, you can go here. I wrote all the guitar and performed them live AND in the studio. I also did the back vocals on the tracks and live as well.

We had a decent following but then,

It started to get to unstable, and people lost a lot by depending on the business to come through. That was a mistake, but I made a lot of mistakes to because of the events. I was a fool, and I had become someone I didn't want to be.

It was sad, but I loved every minute of it. I still live by the creed that band was founded on, and maybe someday I will step back on stage, but it is doubtful.

People are fickle sometimes, including me.

more like,
why the hell do I write music that sounds like this?

you are very generous, thank you
I really liked those two originals you have,
I think you should ditch the covers and work on you own stuff full time.
but consider the source of this advice.

Recorded lots of other folks over the years,........... giving input, multiple takes of the same part, lots of aspirin. Wish I had someone to do my engineering, now that for me would be out of body.

I hear that!

Truthfully, I have machines here and programs, that will do all kinds of stuff.
but I haven't clue how to hook up one midi thing to another.
It would be fantastic just to have a network guy in my home for a bout a week.

Sometimes, I think when I look back. I think what a wonderful time I had being young. I had some good friends, and still do.

I guess for me it was the experience of living my dream that made it worth it to me. The music itself was just an expression of my attempt to be marketable. Of course, it did work for a while..... but then all was lost. lol...

I still love those songs, in particular... P.S. Cold Ride and The Offer....

Seventy Five Summers was a great band, with some great people. I suppose when I look back, the recordings are the least of what I really appreciated.

Soul Clock sounds very Beckish, JCP....cool stuff

And Johnmchakeres, you guys rocked!

I used to do midi in my home studio but would lose the inspiration before I could get the drum patch written, so now I use acoustic drum loops and have gotten pretty good at editing them. It's just easier to drag a loop out for 5 minutes and play along, then go back and edit in crashes and rides etc...

I use Sony acid 8 on my home pc because it is so easy to understand. Don't want to be an engineer so simple is good.

I'm only trying to get the rough idea down while the inspiration is fresh. Once I've got the scratch guitar and vocal, I'll play all the instruments (lame) and then take those tracks into a studio and hire (great) musicians to replace my parts. It saves about 30 hours of studio time on a CD to have all the pre-production done, and putting the idea in demo form helps me communicate what I want the musicians to do

But like JimmyD, that's what I love the most. Taking an idea and seeing it through to a finished recording is THE most stimulating adventure for me.

Anyone else using Sony Acid or a loop based demo recording system?
