I don't think anyone is saying Global Warming could kill the planet, but it could cause a runaway greenhouse effect that would make life difficult or impossible.

Why mass extinctions occur is hotly debated. The Permian Extinction (The Great Dying) caused 97% of the species alive at the time to go extinct, and no one really knows why. But there is little doubt that man is causing species to go extinct at an alarming rate, mostly due to loss of habitat (deforestation), over-hunting and overfishing, and pollution. It is estimated that over 1,000 species of plants and animals go extinct every day; most of these are insects but still this is an alarming statistic. It is up to us to preserve and maintain the life on this planet, or we may be next on nature's extinction list.

What we know: Increasing atmospheric CO2 causes warming. Physics 101. That is how radiative transfer works. If you are truly interested in the science of what we know, this is a good place to start: http://scienceofdoom.com/2010/07/17/the ... radiation/
It discusses the physics of radiative transfer without all the political BS found on RC or SKS.

What we don't know: How much warming. 4 degrees C by the 21st century as Al Gore and others would have you believe? I don't think so Al. No credible evidence to support that. Will a little warmer world be a better/worse place for humans? We don't know.

Good points. All I can say is, I wouldn't buy any beachfront property in Florida, it could be a sandbar someday.

It's the middle of January and I haven't shoveled any snow yet. Not that I'm complaining.

I wouldn't buy property in Florida for all the hurricanes! (not to mention floridians)

We saw a blizzard with 5" of snow in Odessa TX a few days ago, but we've mostly had moderate weather for the last decade. Though the recent summer spiked really high temperatures, on the average it sure seems like it has been cooler than when I grew up here. Even tornado alley seems to have shifted north and east from here, and that would make sense if the earth has shifted it's axis.

But those are the kinds of things that aren't mentioned when the green companies are trying to force us all through political pressure to pay a carbon tax. Why does the government deserve money if I decide to drive a van instead of a volt? My PA won't fit in a Volt, and a Volt won't get me to the next state. I'm paying taxes on the fuel already at the same rate as everyone else, but a carbon tax would put a lot of extra expense on large families and people who drive trucks/vans for their jobs.

Again...why does the government deserve ANY more money from me, especially since they aren't responsible with their spending?

The Green thing is a scam and they are scaring people with lies to extort money.

VERY WELL SAID yod! I agree with you with the exception of Floridians I have known some good ones!
The government LIES to us to control all the sheeple. Then they can pursue THEIR agenda.

I remember when it was global cooling. Science seems to go back and forth on these things. Lots of theories latch on for a while, til later they reverse course and go the other extreme.

Personally, I don't buy either the man-made part, nor the climate change part. There are so many variables involved when speaking about the entire climate of the world - everything from sun spots, solar flares, magma displacement, to the trustworthiness of the weather stations that record temperature.

There are several projects underway examining the condition of the weather stations - and a good portion of those stations in the U.S. are in poor condition - by poor, I mean the historical data has been examined from those stations as well as the environments surrounding the stations - cities and airports have grown up "around and top" of these data-collection points and you can see a direct correlation between the increase in average temperature reported by these stations and asphalt jungles that have grown up around them - buildings, air conditioner exhaust - airports, etc. on the data. Many have been repainted with non-approved pain which aborbs more heat than the original grade - documented as making a difference. Lots of ridiculous scenarios observed by people who are interested in knowing whether the temperature sensors themselves are reliable.

http://www.surfacestations.org/odd_sites.htm

I also think it's a stretch to take such a small limited samples of data to rest on to conclude man-kind is responsible, as opposed to it being a natural process - one that cycles every hundred thousand years. We've been taking temperatures for a few centuries now - but prior to 1900's, we didn't have global stations set-up - that is a fairly new interest.

200 years of samples compared to the age of the planet and we conclude that temperature variation are man-made and not the cyclical norm of a planet rotating around an energy source?

I can't help but be skeptical.

PaperDog wrote:I mean, has everyone simply FORGOT how this whole thing started? Does anyone but me remember when Global Warming was first seen as a threat, how staunchly the right-wingers came out and said FLAT OUT "global warming is not real". Hell, even some conservative radio hosts are STILL believing that lie, but for the most part now they admit it IS real. But instead of accepting the facts and science and evidence, they're trying to shift the blame away from humans. Which is a joke, but at least it's consistent with right-wing thinking, which is basically: we can do no wrong.

Everyone else in the research community, including previous hard-core skeptics, have put political agendas aside, looked at the research and evidence objectively, and come to the same conclusion. Man is causing this. We are doing this to our own planet.

Christopher...sorry I just don't agree with your assertion here...

I don't buy any of the so-called evidence... (We already know that major research institutions on the environment have, in the past, admitted to fudging numbers to win their cases.. )

There is absolutely no credible evidence to prove that man is causing global warming... If we set off ever y dang nuke inthe world right now... We'd feel the climate impact for a decade or two, tops (If the theory of fallout winter holds true) then the earth would self-correct... No way we have the power to destroy this planet. We might kill ourselves off... but never the planet...Especially , never global warming...

There has also been evidence that other planets are also warming to the same extent as the earth. Naturally, it couldn't be related to sun activity. That wouldn't allow governments to get into your wallets. Repeat a lie often enough and people will perceive it as truth. A communist proverb. It works.

Global warming took care of the ice age. (Too many gas guzzling SUV's and coal burning electrical generation facilities I imagine.) Many warming trends and cooling trends have been shown in the distant past. Water on other planets in the form of ice? Was it always ice? Some scientists say that the earth is beginning a cooling phase. That could only mean that we need to burn more gas and coal to save the planet for the children. Yet they can't tell you the weather accurately even on the day they are predicting it.

A good many of these so called global warming scientists are scientists in name only studies have revealed.

This is true. "A fool and his money are soon parted." Unfortunately, when the government is involved, fools assist them in taking everyones money. :D

Folks that believe in global warming are certainly free to believe it, I just wish they would keep their stupidity to themselves. By the way, why hasn't the warming source for this planet ever been taken into consideration concerning these man made warming studies? And did you see the sea levels rise as predicted by these loonies? Have all the ice caps disappeared as these loonies predicted? Did all the Polar bears die like Al said? No The polar bear population is on the increase. Has anything else that these nut cases proposed would happen happen? I believe that it is the hot air springing from the mouths of the global warming crowd that are the true cause of global warming.

By the way, it is written. "The earth shall wear out like a garment" ( for those who believe that God stuff, myself being one of them.) That is wear out not warm out, for the slow to comprehend.

And what can the "Lyin King " do for me? Disappear.

But as the great philosopher Alfred E Neuman once said: "What me worry?"

But Miamians? Or is that Miamioids? Miamiites?

Here's the point you all flucking miss. This administration has GUTTED NASA, the very incredible brain trust that could lead us into the 25th century.

Get over it, forget the next hundred years. We will run out of carbon energy.

In the mean time sanction the salvation of the world by endeavoring to allow out side the box thinking.

You all sound like short haired cats fighting in the night over a piece of chicken.

Its going to get a lot.... WORSE.

Global warming advocates, YOU ARE NOT SOLVING THE PROBLEM! YOU ARE JUST TRYING TO OPEN NEW DOORS TO STEAL!

Here's what Obama did for me personally. His very first year in office, I had 14 boiler jobs cancel. Thats my summer time work.
People had to trade their cars in that year. Anyone remember "CASH FOR CLUNKERS"?
Well that cost me about 40 grand. The plumbing supply at least 10 grand, the 4 guys there that got laid off because it got slow and on and on down the line.
Health insurance costs over the last 3 years have risen,,, another 12 grand out of pocket.
Chickens,,,CHICKENS, that used to cost me 3 bucks are now running 9 bucks.
Energy costs are only going up and out of control.
Everything is just about out of control,,, time for some golf and a trip to Hawaii.

Funny how the same people that believe that man is the cause of global warming need proof their is a God. Man's production of co gasses has been calculated to be about .o3% of that produced in nature. Everything green absorbs it for life. Ozone is produced by man, huh...and it is manufactured by bombarding molecules as an industrial cleaner. Can't it be vaporized in the atmosphere? Greenhouse gasses is a forced farce. Designed only as an excuse to make us pay more for our guilty consciences. Man is closer to nuclear holocaust than flooding caused by melting ice caps. Scientists speak from both sides of their mouths to get funding for science. They talk about global warming, yet deny it is a cycle such as droughts and 100 year floods. Obama, in my opinion, hasn't done anything but separate the aisles. He's had over three years and has done nothing but put healthcare in the hands of those that don't care. You will never get the healthcare provisions that the politicians get. If you believe that drivel, you get what you vote for. The earth shifting it's axis- 10 centimeters. Not miles. If the earth were 1 mile further from the sun we would freeze to death (or life never existed). One mile closer to the sun we would vaporize (or never existed). Pretty smart, God putting us here in this place in time and space, huh?

There are billions of planets in the universe, ours just happens to be one in the right place with the right ingredients, that is why we are here.
