I have an epiphone sg. AS long as you never need to sell it, it's fine.

If you ditch the pickups and stick the gibsons in there, it is as good as a gibson if you are talking tone.

I also stick a "fat finger" on it for sustain.

I will take that into consideration about the Epiphone SG. I am thinking about getting it in black as opposed to the stereotypic Gibson faded red wood look.

If you can afford it, get the 62' elitist.. do not get the plain g-400.

guitaranatomy,

For many years I couldnt afford the guitars I wanted so I played a lot of lower end guitars. The main thing for me was a guitar that would sustain and stay in tune. I should post my old Sears and Roebuck Strat with hot Dimarzio pickups in my profile. Ive still got it and its probably not worth $100, but I basically learned to play on it, and have probably got more gigs on it than any other axe I own. Those old vintage Dimarzios might be worth something these days.

If you can find a guitar that sounds good acoustically and will hold tuning, you can put a hot pickup in there. When you try guitars play a big ole E maj chord and listen to the guitar, Does it sound good? Is it bright or dull sounding? This is my opinion, if it doesnt sound good this way move on to the next one. Sometimes you can play the same model guitar and have a huge difference from another one to another so take your time and find one that sounds good. If you find one then plug it into an amp. If a salesman hooks you up to a Marshall stack sometimes we can fool ourselves into believing that the guitar sounds better than it does. If you have a smaller amp you might want to bring your own and try it. Just because a guitar is cheap doesnt mean its not a good guitar. Ive paid good money for some so called great guitars that sounded horrible.

Good Luck and have fun looking, but always use your ears.

Its all in the chase.

Thanks JW for the advice. It is really helpful. I currently own still my very first guitar which I bought at Sears as well. It is a First Act, I believe it has a pair of humbuckers in it. It sounds alright at times, but I have never used it through a good amp, always had crappy ones. My worst problem is that it needs repairs. I do not have a soldering kit and the output port's wires have broken off. Thus, I end up taping it a back together many times over. So a new guitar and a good amp will be a blessing.

I have heard what you said before from other people, that the price does not make the guitar. You are probably right. I will try it out your way, play an E chord and see how it sounds. I know the amplifier I want, I will try it out on that. I have a very strong ear for a beginning guitarist, very accurate. So if something is off and does not feel right, I should know (I hope, lol). I will find out when I go to try it out.

Now can anyone tell me where they sell new hands on Ebay? Lol. My carpal tunnel is being a pain in my rear end.

Depends on what song Im playin! If I'm doin' Halen/Rhoads, etc.. I'm liking the sound of my new Strat Deluxe... this thing actually screams waaay better than my old strats.

All my other "Power Chord" tunes that don't really require too much effects, I use the Pauls... lovin' the sustain!

Personally, I like the feel of a Taylor, but dang...they're both great instruments. I have played a few vintage Martins and I think you get more bang for the buck with a Taylor. Having said all that, I won't play anything but my Carvin acoustic-electric. Best money I've EVER spent on an acoustic. It sounds as beautiful as it looks...they are worth a look, and you won't break the bank either.

Merry Christmas!

By the way...here is a link to the Carvin C980T...

My first guitar was a Sears Silver tone that was actually made by Danelectro. It had sliders for volume and tone and the strings were about a quarter inch off the neck! For years I was a Gibson junky. I had several LP's, an Explorer, a couple SG's and an ES-335. In the 90's I started playing Strats and I had a 71 with a shaved neck, an 85 with stacked humbuckers and a floyd whammy and interestingly a squire that actually played and sounded better than the 71 after a few upgrades. I also had an original Kramer Strat and an original "Hollywood" style Charvel.

After all of those were "lost" in 2002, I picked up an Ibanez JS and couldn't be happier. It gets all of the fat tone and warmth of an LP and because of the coil splitter it can sound like a Strat or a Tele with the pull of knob. It can go from scorching to whisper soft and clear in the blink of an eye. The basswood body is perfectly contoured and light enough to play for hours without neck pain (unlike a LP) but dense enough to get great sustain. The neck is just perfect. It has minimum radius so it's fast and easy to play. The only change I've made was to get extra wide frets installed.

Bottom line is that just about every guitar made today (even the cheapos) is more consistent than those made in the 50's 60's and 70's. The actual physical setup and feel is much more important than anything else. Hardware, pickups, etc can always be changed but how the guitar feels, plays and how stable the neck is, are the most important aspects. If the intonation and action can't be setup properly (and I've tried $3000 guitars that couldn't be) nothing else matters.

For acoustics I am an Ovation guy, and if you have big money the Adamas.

For Acoustics, I like Tacoma. Any of you guys familiar with this brand? I used to have a beautifully made Tacoma, around $1200 bucks, and had the most gorgeous tone. Taylor's are awesome too, but too trebly for my taste. I like a full rich sound with more bass. The Tacoma, to me anyway, seemed like a fuller, bassier Taylor. Damn I miss that guitar!!!

For electric, my lead guitarist is always after me to buy a Gibson SG, but I just can't seem to find the money to get a good one. I always seem to buy Ibanez. More reasonable price, and has a good sound to me. What I like about them I think too, is that the necks, are so smooth, it's like butter, the hand just slides up and down so easily....

Damn, that sounds almost pornographic. LOL

Wasn't intentional! LMAO!!!

But I have both a Les Paul and Strat Style Ibanez, and also a cheaper Fender Squire Strat.

Many years ago, I used to own a sweet Gretsch electric, Anniversary model. Probably worth some money now. Oh well. I gave it to my "best man" cause he played better than me at the time. That marriage ended in divorce, so I guess I should have kept it. Ha ha. Just kidding.

Looked something like this...

Ok, i give up...the title doesn't match the poll and whatchu guys are talking about doesn't match either the title or the poll.
So what are we talking about again?

Lol. Somehow we tend to stray from the subject the post talks about. It began as what is your favorite guitar, and the poll was what is your favorite amplifier. But now it is about acoustics, and since I know nothing about acoustic guitars, I am not saying too much. Except for I think Ovation acoustics are nice.
