what was the audience reaction? David Lee Roth singing with a bluegrass band? WEIRD. This might start a new trend in music. How about a bluegrass version of "Paranoid" or "Whole Lotta Love?" How about B.B. King singing "The Thrill Is Gone" accompanied only by a banjo? How about ZZ Top's "LaGrange" performed by a chamber quartet? How about a gospel choir singing Billy Idol's "White Wedding?" How about George Strait performing "Bohemian Rhapsody?" How about an opera star singing George Thorogood's "Bad To the Bone?" The possibilities are endless. How about fisherman bob singing Madonna's "Like A Virgin?" Now THAT would be WEIRD! Later...
Bob there are lots of acts out there already that do stuff like that. One that comes to mind (I'm a big fan of theirs) is the Kronos Quartet. They are a really tight string quartet that does all sorts of music but really got famous with their version of Jimmy Hendrix's "Purple Haze". It's really amazing and well done - which sets it apart from Roth's tragic hatchet job on "Jump".
What it requires to do stuff like this is a sense of taste and creative prowess; something that David Lee Roth clearly lacks these days.

Poor Dave, he should just get it over with and end it all. The 80's are over and complete.

certainly doesn't describe somebody who is totally burned out and a shell of what he used to be. David Lee Roth was a great rock and roll singer IN HIS PRIME. He is way past his prime, obviously. His trying to re-invent himself obviously isn't working. As far as anybody performing a song with completely different instrumentation and MAKING IT WORK, that's creative genius. A lot of the covers I perform are substantially different than the original. However I'm not going to perform say "Puff the Magic Dragon" because it's a totally different genre and it wouldn't make any sense. What's really weird about what Roth did was perform a song which he helped make famous in a genre of music (bluegrass) that has nothing whatsoever to do with the original genre. If a bluegrass band performed "Jump" without Roth that would have been cool (if they made it work). Roth performing it that way is almost akin to him saying "I'm burned out and I can't rock any more." That's why it came off so poorly. I thought about my post and I just might try and work up a blues version of "Like A Virgin" with my dirty voice. We'll make it tastey and creative. Later...

Hmmm, Bob go for it! I'm telling you, Type O Negative doing their dirty scary grungey dirge cover of Seals & Crofts "Hummingbird Don't Fly Away" is CLASSIC!
I'll go with any TYPE O NEGATIVE, well except their covers. eccchhh
I love "Can't lose you" and "In Praise of Bacchus".

Axgrinder wrote::evil: I never liked him! It was the brothers Van Halen that made that band pop! Actually, minus Edward's monster shredding, it would have pooped! As far as Mr. Roth is concerned..... He might as well go ahead and J-U-M-P!!!
