Bah! Not even! It's just a fun conversation. Don't misread me over the internet :) It's all in good fun.

The only thing I want to say to that is: Have you tried to play some of those paint by number solos? Krikey... some of that sh*t is hard man :-)

I think it's one thing to play a simple solo note-for-note. Okay, paint by numbers.

But the hard stuff? When I see guys totally copping out of the solo to "Bark at the Moon" or "Crazy Train" or "Enter Sandman" (as I have done before, especially before I had the time to really sit down and learn it) I know they're doing that not because they want to add their own flavor, but because they can't f-cking play the thing correctly! LOL. Some of it is difficult stuff man. So I don't buy the argument that a lot of times guys are just good, but adding their own twist. Nah, they just can't do it :)

BINGO.
I think most of the time, either they can't do it, or they are arrogant enough to think that they can make it better.

I make a distinction between covering a song and doing a remake.

There are some iconic songs or solos that you just can't mess with, unless you are a special talent in your own right. Even then...

Go ahead, have your band play something like Stairway to Heaven 'your way' - see how it turns out for ya.
(Excluding something that is tongue in cheek and it's obvious that it's meant as tongue in cheek)

I agree with you on one thing Zip, to do Stairway your way, you'd have to be at least as good as Jimmy Paige. Other songs, not so much. What chaps my ass is someone that does a more simplistic song, makes itself an icon and someone else renews it by sounding the same only to steal what's left of the royalties of a good song. Another thing- Chilli.

I don't know, I think Frank Zappa had the coolest Stairway cover :

Note: pay particular attention to the horn section :)
To each his own.

I don't like Zappa really but you guys have enough going on to be respectful.

If you dig it, that's fine..

Every time I hear that tune butchered by someone, I invariably get up and leave.

If you want something to beat up on, play Sat. Night Special or Sweet Home Alabama. People expect you to pummel/beat the crap out of those 2.

Capt you would have been proud of what I did to Sweet Home Alabama at our last gig, LOL.

That rock band from Russia with the
great big Elvis hairdoos(can't think of
there name, but there on utube) do a
killer version of Stairway to Heaven.

I like Frank's version also

Seems to me a lot of people on here are overthinking cover songs, just enjoy the fact that you can play something in front of people that they want to hear is the way I look at it.

If you want to take libertys with a song, then fine if not then thats fine too.

I'll never forget the Guitar Shop in Wayne's World... Had a big sign hanging right over the Gibsons and Fenders "No Stairway To Heaven Allowed!!"

LOL

Zappa's rendition was extremely respectful of the song... I know this, because He's torn up other Artists Like Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe" I mean that dude can fry, flip, bake and serve just about any song he wants...

JW, you know if you were full of bs, I'd call you on it but I know you guys rock the Lynard Skynard as well as most everything you play. I.e. I am quite sure you do Sweet Home Alabama well enough to satisfy even a prude like myself. lol

And I think you are DEAD ON with the over thinking of the cover tunes.

I can't say I agree with everything you say, but when you make the music sound as good as you do live and in person, there can be no argument.

I think musicians should have to pass a musical test to play certain tunes like SWEET HOME and the good news is your band complete with Bon Scott sound alike is more than ready to do what you do best.

The rest of the world, however.. should just stay away from traps like Stairway To Heaven.
