I can only hope my rendition(if ever produced), doesn't turn out like Ted Campbell playing Assical Gas! I may have to buy a book. This is BS.trying to Dl from YT.

Sounds like perhaps a challenge brewing.

Care to throw down the glove ?
Yes, George I think I'll take you up on that. Starting today. I did my manicure last night, but I won't need gloves.

So it's on then ...

crunchysoundbite wrote:I base my time line on my experience learning TNs Stranglehold. It was not as easy as 38SPs Hold on Loosely. A technique was mentioned in the thread about hanging the thumb (like a hook). I agree with that method hanging, but not as a hook. I use it as a low E damper. I've used finger picking techniques in songs like Dust in the Wind. I wasn't real bad or good at it, but I havn't lost it. Yes, Paper, you're right about motivation. How long do you play Dust in the wind before wanting to cry yourself. Someone says, "Why are you crying?" I say"I was just playing guitar" they say"Funny, that's why we're crying too!" Then someone stupid with a flare gun... Motivation isn't everything. Support is as much a key, if not just plain tolerance. This may be a song my wife can tolerate me getting through.

Crunchy, now that's funny! (About the crying) :)

J-HALEY wrote:Dog, thats the bummer of being in a coverband. You often have to learn songs you don't like. For example I am learning 2 songs right now I don't like. I have found over the years those songs tend to grow on me. Sometimes they end up being signature songs that I become known for. The band was told to learn 2 songs by a very FAMOUS actor that is also a musician for the Vegas gig. They are keeping it very hush hush because of the fame of this person. The company that has hired us always has a very High Profile Key note speaker so I don't doubt this will be the case! Anyhow I am learning the songs (I'll probably only play them this one time) I am gonna kick @ss on them as a pro!

If anybody can kick their asses J, I think it'd be you ;) I sure am curious about the actor....:8

Re Bad song Covers growing on you : The funny thing about those... and tumors...is they'll both grow on you LOL!.

Dog one of the songs has already grown on me! I was having fun with it earlier this evening! I wish I could say who it is (it's KILLING me) but I can't! I can only say it is an actor/musician and this person is VERY Famous! It will be a trip to be on the same stage! Hopefully there will be lots of pictures and I will let the cat out of the bag when I get back!

I always loved 'Classical Gas.' I remember it came out about the same time as 'Born to be Wild.'
.
I was at an open mike a few months back, visiting friends, and a guy got up after me (thank God!) and played 'Classical Gas' exactly like Mason Williams.
Wow - what a performance - he had all the nuances down perfectly (except where the symphony comes in).
Wotta performance.
Soooo glad he went after me and not before me.
. . . hard act to follow . . .

I will down load that as soon as I post this. Meanwhile, I'll wash the dishes. As a favor to my wife, whom has been with me through yet another very hard and trying time. I downloaded different versions of the song yesterday. Truthfully, I loved Jim Stafford's (Johnny Carson) version, although I won't say best. I hoped to get a version of Roy Clark. I've got a few things to do to bring some money in today, but it won't take all day. I will preview your prompt, then get busy. I've been challenged by Bandmix and all your posts. My plate is full. I'm going to print Lynard Dylan's Scales and exercises. I'm not sure which version I will go with. Your recommendation is highly regarded. I may not say which version also because Sans is up on the challenge and this may keep it interesting. I will find a way to upload my success when I get there. Best of luck to you George. If I were to guess who your actor/musician is, there is only one that comes to mind. He's already received notoriety here on Bm recently. I could be wrong But here goes... Andy Griffith.

I am now downloading the Glenn Campbell version you recommended. Ain't heard a lick out of it yet. Yesterday, I downloaded the 1977 GC version. A great performance, but the view was from afar. I also felt there was too much in the mix to use as a tutorial, but, the more I here from others before me gives me what I feel is more license. Jim Staffords version is speckled with bits of The Flight Of The Bumblebee, which is another challenge in itself. His fingers go so fast, the camera can't keep up!

Hey Crunch, Jim Stafford is a hell of a
guitar player, he's had a theater down
here for close to 30 years. When I first
carried my guitar down to Branson his
was the 2nd theater I stopped at he
wasn't much help, but I believe he
truly tried to help me.
Somebody posted a thread where a
guy beat on his guitar and tuned on it
while playing. Sh#t this is what Jim
Staffords been doing at his show for
a long time now.

That mighta been me that posted...I was referring to Rory Gallagher...Saw him at a concert and flat out busted a string. Without missing a beat, his band covered well. he replaced the string and was full 6 in no time flat...I'm saying at least 60-70 seconds... Pretty professional and amazing , I thought...
