Our constitution addressed the issue of Religion from a Christian, not an world religions perspective.
The key is that no denomination was to become a 'state church' like the Anglicans in England and various others in Europe.
They would have laughed out loud if they heard us debating the nonsense about tolerance of Muslims, Scientologists, Wiccans, Hindus and so on - while attacking our own culture and the Christian religion. No other religion is routinely attacked by the over world, which is certainly something to consider.
Can you imagine Tom Jefferson authorizing creation of Wiccan 'chaplains?"
I don't care if people are involved what that stuff - but I want them to sit down and shut up while we celebrate the birth of Christ.
When I was growing up the Christians in my town worked the Jewish holidays and to the extent necessary, vice versa. The high school cafeteria served fish on Fridays for the Catholics. The 12 grade typing instructor was queer as a three dollar bill but nobody gave him any grief nor did he push that on others and demand his 'rights'. Somehow it all worked.
If we'd had Muslims we'd have figured something out for them too. But it would have been a two way street. No coddling.
Now that the govt has gotten involved in it, this doesn't work, it costs a lot of money, is used to justify govt intrusion in our lives, and it smacks of idolatry.
But so what. Merry Christmas boys.
