Advocatus Diaboli time:
1.) Hendrix wasn't even really known in the U.S. until 1967 and he died in 1970. Creed had a good seven years of fame and a built in fanbase among Christians, I would suggest.
I'd also argue that Stapp's not a bad singer, very limited, but not bad.
In my opinion, this is just a shock-value thing. If you told me Human Clay sold more than everything ever put out having to do with Jimi, then I'd be disgusted, but Creed had a greater amount of time to sell those albums and tour in support of same.
2.) I'll leave that to a better advocate of the Devil than I.
3.) "Tik-Tok" sold 12.8 million copies in 2009. However, this gauge is a bit selective in that The Beatles are number one, all-time, in so many other categories that it's just ridiculous.
I would also argue that singles, in general, are more popular now than they were then. Furthermore, I think the absence of single sales for The Beatles just indicates a tremendous public faith in their ability to produce high-quality albums, why buy the single when you already know you'll buy the album.
Kesha has the advantage of the Internet. In fact, the single in question was offered for free on I-Tunes for sometime, so don't know whether or not that's counting into the overall number.
Anyway, people didn't really buy Beatles singles, they bought Beatles ALBUMS which is why Kesha will NEVER touch them in that category.
4.) I don't know if it means the album or the single. If it means the single, see number 4, partcularly with Internet Advantage. Plus, The Beatles didn't sell singles, they sold entire ALBUMS!
If it refers to the album, the album consists of singles previously no included on any album and B-Sides, placing this album at an inherent disadvantage against anything popular at this time.
5.) "Popular," is a subjective term. I have no idea what this fact is based upon.
6.) That's tough to explain. Celine Dion's a Hell of a singer, even though I don't personally care forher style of music, but that's damn hard to explain. In U.S. sales, by the way, the difference between Falling Into You and Nevermind is only in the neighborhood of 500,000.
I guess my entire argument, really, is that it's not like Celine Dion's horrible, and women love her music.
7.) Geez....That album almost doubled-up over the Celine Dion one. The devil needs a better attorney.
8.) They are both pop artists and tremendous advocates of hollow and vapid songs with throw-away lyrics. I also have no reason to suspect Katy Perry of being a possible child molester, she could have doubled him up with most number one singles from an album for all I care.
9.) I think I'm going to puke. I knew Streisand sold a lot, but why did they have to bring up two of my idols, Eddie Vedder and Johnny Cash? That's just wrong.
10.) Country's popular, Reggae is not. Why should this be a disappointment? I'm not saying BRC is better than BM, but it's just not at all surprising.
I also say, "Blame the 70's," they're the ones who didn't buy Marley albums, they could have, but they didn't.
11.) That's just charting. They're just looking for any cnceivable way that the cast of Glee is superior to The Beatles. Charting doesn't mean jack, they could have 200 songs chart and not sell more copies than, "I Want to Hold Your Hand." (Five Million)
12.) Girls have their boy toys, at least one per generation. The 80's girls had Duran Duran (who actually happened to be tremendous musicians) the 90's girls had New Kids on the Block then Hanson/Backstreet Boys/N'Sunc/Five/98 Degrees/ThatOtherBandWithFiveMetrosexuals who somewhat continued into 2000.
I think there was a dry spell for a few years, I have to admit I don't pay much attention. Then....JUSTIN BIEBER!
Fathers love hearing, "I love you," from their daughters, and they get to hear that when they purchase whatever the title of any one of Justin Bieber's albums is. The teenage girl market shall bear fruit eternal.
Besides, Bieber could retire tomorrow, be set for life, and he's not even old enough to legally buy a pack of smokes. He was just in the right place at the right time, but, "Haters gonna hate," as the kids are saying these days, so let them hate. Bieber will just be sitting back and sipping Cristal as long as he can find someone willing to contribute to the delinquency of a minor.
