Hey guys, I have been having some conversations about rock and if it is indeed dead or not. My theory is that it is dead kind of in the same sense that Jazz is dead. Its lost its popularity and freshness with a majority of people. There is still rock artists out there and I am hoping for a huge comeback of the rock genre, but it just seems so much more difficult with record labels not taking risks on musicians like they used to. Also the financial burden that it is to start at band and get your music out there is much more difficult because of pirate downloading. Lets leave the topic of illegal downloading for another time though.
What do you guys think?

Dude as long as some kids are cranking up in thier parents garage it aint dead, has nothing to do with record labels. In fact i think you should be asking if record labels are dead instead of rock, that might be a more appropriate question.

And I disagree if its only about getting your music heard it is easier right now to get your music heard by the masses than it ever was!

Rock will NEVER die... The same can be said for Classical Music.

I dig all these answers. My next question is what is the media or whoever definition of dead? I don't see how people can say it is dead with the definition of non-existent...

No man. The media is not dead. It just can't handle the amount of amazing talent that is no longer stopped by record companies deciding what we listen to.

When I hear stories about all the talented people I come across,,,,
The rules have all changed. I wish I was 35 years younger in one way, but then again I probably didn't have the skills needed to capitalize on the music biz the way it stands right now.

Rock being dead,,,, No it just keeps widening and transitioning to encompass all forms of music. Some of it I don't like, but that's just the way drum stick falls.

I think these are amazing times for a young artist that has talent and drive.
I think these are amazing times for any old fart,like me, that still has some drive left.

I would not take too much stock in the opinions of any " media " types.

I mean for the love of Pete ... look at the sh*t they promote as entertainment.

They are brain dead ... Rock is alive and well.

Media only promotes those who are advertising with them. It's always been that way, but now that record labels are dead (since about 2002) media has less advertisers.

They have tried to bury rock several times, but then people get bored with it's replacement, so as long as guitars are being played, rock will not be dead.

hip-hop is a form of rock, right???
