Being in a bar band, BTW, isn't about playing what's "good" or "great". If it were, we'd be doing Rush. We play what people want to hear and what they want to dance to. Sometimes that means playing a song that someone in the band doesn't like. I'm not particularly fond of "Paralyzer" by Finger 11, but people love to dance to it so we do it....

That makes you a craftsman as opposed to an artist. I've never played a song I didn't like or want to play. But then again I don't play bars.

Oh... I am Sorry.... I forgot that they borrowed John Lee Hooker... (Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi ) for a while...to cover their Blues Genre claim to fame...

Not saying there weren't other innovative acts form Detroit, but Motown was unequivocally (R& B specifically ) profound, world class model.
Lets just cut to the chase here... We could go on and on about Bill Haley and his one hit, Madonna and her material world..and Eminem and his misogynistic angry-white-boy complex...and a plethora of punk, techno pop and other angles of music..
But if you look at the Hall of famers...(From the Detroit scene) a vast majority of them come out of that Motown R & B side

So Yeah, All Detroit really has is Motown...

All the rest is flash pan , experiments and fizzled out attempts to take it to the next level... I'm not saying that in a disrespectful way or that they they aren't playing the game well, but lets not get carried away... "Rich history"... is bullshit ... No city has a monopoly on musical richness... Even Liverpool isn't that f**king arrogant.

And I am only bringing this up because its that kind of arrogance (Detroit claiming musical richness) to justify slamming a band that they Dont agree with.

Paper you need some serious musical education. The list of great music that has come from Detroit would take all day to write. There are hardcore great musicians here, and I consider myself just average. We don't make pillows here, we still make cars and music that's as hard and shinny as a new Camaro. Because we have such a rich musical community we can smell crap like Crickleback a mile away. If you or anyone else like them fine, I still say they suck.

Rich History... yes.
And it's not like L.A., N.Y., Nashville.
People aren't rushing to Detroit to break into the music scene. But they have produced a lot of homegrown talent.
Most city are known for something...an important part of Detroits history is about the music. But I don't think anyone is calling it a monopoly.

Oh Gosh...you got me there Neanderpaul... Okay... I stand corrected...I'll rephrase... Detroit only has Motown, (and a plethora of "attempts" at innovative styles). Let me say it yet another way... MI is "rich" in attempts to play the game... of music. As far as I am concerned, they succeeded with Motown R& B more so than any other genre... While Detroit takes pride and boasts in its attempts, I find that most of the attempts fall short of the glory of Motown... . Is there any other way I can say this,,to get my point across...? I'm not debating that MI has a RICH HISTORY of involvement in American music.
However, I am saying that most of their sh*t is not good enough to warrant the complete arrogance of of a bunch of beer guzzling sports fans, to be outright hostile toward one particular element in the whole array of musical bands. What part of "F** k Detroit and its Arrogance/attitude" dont ya understand??

Detroit has a ton of music not just the awesome motown. I mean even madonna who you cited has had a HUGE career. Even if "ray of light" was her last big thing that's still a LONG run. And since when does commercial success dictate valid or even good?

I have separate outlets for my artistic side of music.

Music does not have to be a one-dimensional thing for an individual.

I play in a rock cover band because I enjoy playing, performing and making a connection with the crowd. There is nothing like playing in front of a crowd. There is no experience like it.

I also write my own music and express myself creatively through that music. Does that make me an artist? I think it does.

I play open mics where I can play the songs I want to play. And that lets me perform as well.

Music is so much bigger than a single "label". It's silly to label stuff and even sillier to hate on bands for being successful. It's stupid.

Express yourself through your music. Get what YOU want out of it. But ragging on other people for doing what they enjoy? Labeling them?

Dumb. Lose that crap. It's tired, old and pointless.

What's stupid is for you to not get that jimmy, others , and myself hate the music of nicleback because it sucks. There success is irrelevant. Anybody who likes OR dislikes music because of success OR lack thereof is a sheep.

Jimmy, I dont debate the RICH musical involvement of MI in American music... I'm not even debating the lack of certain musical quality of nickleback...(or as you say...they suck)

But, with very rare exception, your hardcore Detroit musicians cant outclass historical Jazz and swing from New Orleans, Chicago and St Louis or Rock/Pop like the many of the UK invasion bands, , or US West Coast of the 80's 90's... .

Dude, its a no brainer... You Dont need 'musical education' to see that...

My beef here is not that Detroit hates nickleback... Its that Detroit is behaving like a bunch of arrogant pigs about the issue... All I can say is this: Detroit's best aint exactly flipping the world upside down. So who the f**k do they think they are to castigate some band with such hostility... ??
