haha. okay, thanks for that. yeah, initially I stated for a practice room and I thought I said small outdoor party, but in any case - yeah, I don't need anything extravagant. I think I just saw there wasn't really an input for the bass in the manual and I started to think - does the bass need to be mic'd? I don't think anyone does for the size of room and any small party we play...

Man Sans - you're a control freak! :D

cool. thanks!

Well ... I really have no control delusions as such ... but I am psychotic about logistics.

Just like my wife and I made the 45 mile drive out to where our gig will be Sunday so I wont have to look for it then & have a picture in my head of how to best approach the set up.

With Eric ( Bass ) Ray's guitar and mine ... in small settings we just run the vocals with the PA and use our monitor speakers as mains.

With the larger of course we use the whole set up with the bass / drum PA feeding one channel on the main PA.

Eric's amp as well as mine have direct out for signal.
That is two less microphones to EQ or feed back.

My RX1200 is a great tool. With four amps 2 monitor / 2 main all four have separate 7 band EQ. Music break, built in effects ...
Lot of features I don't even use.

She's been in pretty hard use for over four years without a hiccup.

One thing though ... be sure to get the road warrior case is applicable.
( Provided you buy from Carvin )
That thing is worth it's weight in gold.

ha ha George you are just like my friend Barry the guy that runs our sound. I think it is called anal retentive :P (just kidding)
The inserts are for effects and compressors. If your mixer has 2 onboard effects processors you really don't need to use the inserts for effects unless you don't mind having a huge rack full of effects processors. I use my inserts for compressors.
Blues Edge, we are using EAW line array subs. and JBL Venue Performers for the tops. If you go to a major concert in an arena they have lots of these and they are designed to be flown. If you look in the pics. I think you can see them. We don't fly them. There are 3 double subs on each side with one top. They are very clean and compact and EXTREMELY efficient. Each cab is $2,500 and there are a total of 8. We are using a Allen & Heath Digital Mixrack controlled via wireless laptop. We are also using Shure PS 900 wireless IEM's Everyone has there own personal mix.
Guys live sound technology is advancing by leaps and bounds. This is really an exciting time to be a live musician. It is to the point to where as soon as you buy some p.a. gear it is OBSOLETE!

The mixers I'm looking at have assignable on board compression and 4 sub groups.

I will need three years just to figure this one out.

George, that mixer is awesome! Not only do you have the compressors, you also have 2 onboard effects processors that have there own seperate sends. Which means they don't use the sends for monitors. it also has 2 docking ports for wireless units. I would BUY this mixer if I were you!
George this mixer is really not that hard to figure out. It is VERY user friendly
just follow the signal path. It really eliminates the need for outboard racks. This thing is $200.00 less than the Allan & Heath 1602 Mixwiz that I bought in 2009. It Does WAY more and is made in the good ole USA. At the time I bought that Mixwiz Carvin didn't have the functionality it now has!

Jams,
Keep your goals clearly in sight. If you want a quality, small budget/small party system the Carvin is a good choice. With only vocal mics and carefully placed main speakers it will be all you need and both the band and the audience will hear you well. Monitors can always be added later but trust your instincts. The K.I.S.S. principle works when applied properly.

A PA sys can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be but the larger it is, the more $$, more set up time, more things to go wrong, more things to store, transport, repair, grow obsolete, get stolen, maintain etc.
