Well boys, lemme tell ya...there's just no way to gracefully recover from busting a D string on a Bigsby equipped guitar (Les Paul), when the only other axe on stage is a open G tuned Fender Esquire. We did a gig last night and were in the middle of a rocking version of The Cult's "Wildflower" when disaster hit just before the solo. As soon as the singer sends me the MP3, I'll pass it along so you can all have a big LOL!

Yessir, that wouldn't be any damn good either! If the guitar had a stop tailpiece, I could of worked around the busted D string, but as all you players with Bigsby experience know, the tuning on the rest of the strings goes right out of whack if one breaks

You are correct sir! I DID have a backup for the Les Paul, but it was in the trunk of the car due to the tiny playing area, so I grabbed it at the end of the song. I even had to stack my two combo amps rather than have them side by side, and I wasn't digging that at all either.

Way back in early 70s' I had gone to see Rod Stewart and Faces. The opening Act was the Irish Blues man Rory Gallagher. Rory kicks ass anyway we slice it...but what really made him stand out that night, was that he had busted a string while playing some of his riffs...

Without missing a beat and without flinching, he managed to replace that string, tune it properly in under 2 minutes and get back to playing, as we all watched. How did he do it? The answer is quite simple... His band had his back... and essentially Rory gave us all a free lesson on how to change a string on your guitar in a pinch... while upholding the momentum of the song they had started on... If you ask me, that was pretty graceful... overall... 8)

There is no reason for a string to break on stage. New topic maybe?

For some reason Ray breaks them a lot.

Myself ... to date ... have never broken a string on my LP.

Back when I played the Strat with 9's ... well yeah.

I always break the g-string for some reason! LOL

Glen I think a good subject would be how long will a string last?

I was woodshedding for a gig recently and broke a string so I restrung the 3 guitars I was gonna use, one of them I broke 2 strings on before the gig, not at the gig, but just warming up that morning.

I had found this huge case of strings I have had for probably 15 years and I used some of those strings, I just wonder if they sit in the case for too long, Does it hurt them?

Honestly I dont change strings very often any more and I did love the liveliness of the strings for pinch harmonics and such. So sound wise I couldnt hear anything wrong with them.

oh bummer! :)
It's odd - I consider myself a heavy bender - I mean, I don't hold back when bending a string - I'll shake the sucker too while it's bent a whole or even a 1 1/2 notes above tuning - and to date, I have never broken a string - and I play 9's. I don't understand why... but - of course, now that I said that, I'm probably doomed to have this happen on the first note of a solo like you :D

Waiting to hear the audio! :)

i saw Chuck Berry change a string on stage once. it was incredible - hooked it in there and tuned it up as if the tuning was part of the song!

i occasionally break a string on six string guitar but I'm well aware of the reason and work on it a lot. A heavy handed bassplayer has to remind himself that a pick is not a hammer!

If you continually break the same string you may have a bur on your bridge or string saddle. If you get some 600 grit sandpaper and lightly sand that area it should take care of that. As some of you know I play a strat. and it is a ritual when I change strings as it has the tremolo arm (whammy bar) if I break a string it goes completely out of tune because it eases the tension from the springs pulling from the other side. Like you Dajax I am the only guitar player. I change the strings on that strat EVERY gig. When changing strings I never pull the end from the tuning machines thru the string saddle as this can scratch the chrome and create a bur. I also check the strings when unpacking them because they can be damaged. I also am very careful not to bend them as that weakens the string and it will break at the bend. I buy strings in the 10 pack carton because I get them at about $3.50 a set. I know strings are made of the same materials on the same machine and there is little to no difference in them. I have found that I ALMOST never break strings anymore and I use the D'addario 9 to 42's

There is no reason for you to comment on any of my threads. I don't like you, I'm not interested in anything you have to say, and the only reason I saw this latest piece of crap posting of your's is because I forgot to log in, and block a small handful of goofballs such as yourself. That won't happen again, so knock yourself out sport, and reply if you must, but I won't be seeing whatever "brilliant" retort you cook up with your breathtaking intellectual firepower.

So touchy, I guess you never read the good things I said about your last thread, second song from sat night. I guess you are so blinded by your own self imposed censorship that you are blind. Your strong dislike of me comes from our juxtaposed politics, and your feeble attempt to gang up with other people on here. You know what you tried to do me. YOU WERE THE NASTY ONE!

I never realized a real musician could limit themselves so much. I'm not going to attack you DAJAX. I'm going to repeat what I said. I thought you played real good.

I love it,, Self censorship,,, Stick your head in the sand,,,, Leave your butt in the air.
