Damn Glen you must live in a depressing little place. First of all, I would be welcome at the open mic any time, the host came up to me after I played and said how much he liked my set and my voice. Second. I drank Sam Adams that night at $3.50 a bottle, not a bad deal. There are no cover charges at any open mics around here, so for $20 you can have a few drinks and play some tunes. As Charlie used to say, winning!

You are just a Jimmy. You don't like me. I don't like you.
I just wish you really had some playing ability to back up your bullcrap.

All you have is ego, and the reason I don't play open mic nights is because all you run into is people like you. LEGENDS IN THEIR OWN MINDS. Not good players, just a stage for losers.

Even when I have tried to be nice, you are just a threatened person.

Man, your ego is way larger than your talent. I would love to be able to sit down and jam for 5 minutes, just to watch your frustration. Around here beginning players start at VAI level.

Man your ego is way larger than your talent. I'd love to say go something, but I hate wasted words. :)

Fifth you have to explain to the police officer that saw you leaving the open mic night that you weren't drinking and yes.... Channel #5 is my favorite.

And you want to play guitar........ :o

Open Mic Nights... Yes, 5 dollar beers and Not exactly The House of Blues ... But as some folks might agree, its better than hanging round a karaoke bar. (And its a damn good thing, that I have a day job) 8)

Concentrate on what's important...your performance.

The bickering is a negative.

Everyone is difficult here, just accept it and continue.

People are damn slack jaws until they play a few measures and then everyone just cools out as quick as the new jet they won't sell to Taiwan.

To be a musician:

have a thick skin

be prepared

Know your role and shut yer hole

and my fav, always be prepared to tell off a nobody at an open mic.
(just make sure he isn't a producer in disguise)(been there, done that)

So you admit you don't go to open mics so your little sermon was bullcrap; open mics don't hardly ever charge cover charge, and drinks are usually more reasonable than other nights because they know most musicians don't have much money.

And WTF does beginning players start at Vai level even mean? That you're better than him? What a pathetic joke.

Your right you have to have thick skin.
Singers and songwriters take the most criticism,
players after that.
Open mic nights around here usually consist of:
1. House band plays first hour 9-10
2. Members of house band and friends play 2nd hour 10-11
3. Known players in the crowd are chosen for the 3rd hour 11-12
4. Players off the sign in sheet are called up (This is what I heard as this last hour is way paa my bedtime) 12-1

I think the bickering can be negative only if you let it be negative,
I try to put a postive spin on all of it, and laugh the rest away. :)

The best open mics have a sign up sheet and time limit and go by it, period. Yes the house band plays the first set but after that it should be who is on the list. I wouldn't go to one under any other circumstances.

The open mic. nights down here are EXACTLY the way Mr. Dylan described thats why I hardly ever go to them. If I want to get up there and play for free after spending $40.00 on Beer (40 bucks on beer just pisses me off) I can't even catch a buz off that. Then I finally get to play at 1:30am when I was the first to sign in. I won't be doing many of those but its all good!

This was meant as light banter and you immediately turned this into an attack on me. You don't have a clue who you are fooling with. Jimmy I have to play DOWN when I work with guitarists like you. I don't live in a depressed area. I find great guitarists all the time. Funny, the better they are,,, The easier they are to open doors.

I'm not going to sit here and suck up to you, I'm flocking tired of you ego and attacks. You give a huge kudos to a bunch of guys from England, all you want to do is keep them at your level. I won't do that. The stuff that they were playing didn't rock... That was creative warm up stuff I would use to check out a drummer. You are kidding? No your not. You are just coming after me. I'm gonna start pickin on you for the fun of it.

You think your that good, FLOCK YOU JIMMY.

Mind you that comment was just light banter. My reply was just out of fun.

FlLOCK YOU JIMMY!

Fortunately for me, this open mic is specifically to showcase us amatuers... There is no opening band per-se...Just a lot of poetry readers and a few folkee dolkees like me... to sing and bring some dimension to the otherwise flat prose of younguns who aint lived the pain and gony....(Of my singing ...yet )

Actually Dog I have to give you some big songwriting credits. I know I've posted this before, you have some cool songs.

Hey that blues song has a cool lyrical twist. I may just play it with my garage band tomorrow night, then you can sue me for ,,,,,what ever. :) (It will be completely different from what you have up but it will still be your song.)
