Well,

Being so new at the "gig" thing... I will make my debut at our local down- town coffee house open-Mic (The Percolator) on Sat the 24Th of Sept.

So, I have made a check-list... to prepare for my glorious performance...:

LIST:
1) Eat gravel and charcoal the night before, to get that "Dylan in a coffee house" voice thing going.

2) Stop all showers and bathing, 72 hours prior to show time...To get that"Dylan smells bad in the coffee house" thing going.

3) A 'short list' of material... I think I can pull off about three songs before their cane reaches to grab and pull me off from stage right.

4) will need AN entourage ...consisting of my best friend, (who will be the planted shill in the audience) and his girl friend (with sisters). The girls will all dress up like Britney's. One will bring her boa... (I have arranged to pay one of them ...to throw her panties at me during my chorus of my new Ballad: "Vevet Jone's Book O Love".

5) Will need AN extra Sharpie...in case 'they' (That's pro-noun, without antecedent) want autographs... NO wait...make that Two extra Sharpies, just in case...

6) Will need to plot my sneak-out exit from back of the stage

7) Rent Limo... (Can only afford to have it do a drive by out front) Will actually have PT cruiser waiting in the back...

I think that's it... Got all the bases covered...

If you wind up playing at any pubs:
Use extra large portion of the charcoal gravel mix or smoke a pack of reds before you go on to get that Tom Waits growl.

It would not surprise me one bit if you start to find your missing pieces once you start gigging regularly.
Good Luck Bro!

+1
Play and sing from deep within your soul and let the music speak for itself. If it is really good, people will drown you with applause.

I did an open mic last night at a new place, the first one I've done in many moons. The place was jumping, mostly your typical blues jammers but a variety of players. I played acoustic and sang pretty well. It felt good to do a non-band thing for a change.

Now that I'd like to see.

Heh heh be careful what you wish for George.

I love to go to a place where no one knows me and just freeze the place. A lot of the jammers get ignored with their covers of SRV, etc. I could feel the whole bar watching me last night when I played.

There are some great replies here. I figure if I can do an open mic night I should be able to do some busking. I am a retired trucker. I started playing guitar again last August after a 44 year gap. I look at the busking thing as a possible way to travel when and where I want. Combined with my photography work maybe I can at least eat a good meal while I am on the road. My only problem is stepping out in front of a crowd. Yikes!

Busking is a great way to test new material or to see if you really have marketable talent. Just set up on a street corner, subway, or a busy park. If a crowd gathers and money starts falling in your guitar case, you know you've got somthin. If the crowd flees or people find ways to avoid you... you've got some homework to do or possibly some soul searching. After three or four busking sessions you will know if music is your calling. Sometimes busking will indicate that maybe you should consider taking up golf instead.

I would not be a bad thing, if while taking up some golfing, one looked up to discover a crowd gathering ...

I don't like open mic nights. First you have to pay $5 for 50 cents worth of beer, second you have to be careful not to bruise any egos,(bet Jimmy ain't gonna be welcomed back) Third you got to explain to the wife why you weren't fighten OFF those young girls. Third you got to explain to the wife why you smell like perfume. Oh I said third already.

Fifth you have to explain to the police officer that saw you leaving the open mic night that you weren't drinking and yes.... Channel #5 is my favorite.

And you want to play guitar........ :o
