Agreed. I have seen them many times and they still put on a great show. Jon Herington does a tasteful rendition of one of the greatest Larry Carlton guitar solos ever. Jon puts his own stamp on it while retaining key elements of the original. Bravo!

Never been one of my favorite bands but I appreciate their signature sound. I believe they should be credited with being the most influential band that introduced a jazz element to mainstream rock.

Upon the first visit to the home of one whom would become a close friend
( before he killed himself over a damn woman).
Sitting in his living room floor burning some herb knocking back some cold ones listening to and talking music.
I brought in my rather extensive collection of cassettes and went through them.
My new friend asked me if I had any Steely Dan ...
My reply was " Steely what ?? "
Of course I knew who they were I was just jerking his chain.

Great tunes ... sorry ... just sparked a memory of one lost ... :(

If you want to add a jazz element to R&R I don't think Steely Dan should be given that much credit. I like em, but the credit list should include the Beatles to the Doors to just about every one. Here are 2 that are so forgotten.

I love Steely Dan there was such a large pool
of talented musicians in the seventies
You think will ever have that many talented
bands at one time again?

Kenny Loggins and Michal McDonald
Bwahahahahahahahahahahaha

They were such a great band... One of the few that actually fused consonance and dissonance togther so well.

I read somewhere that they even invented a chord , they used to call it "Mu sharp" . It was some jazz configured chord...

That's no mean trick ...

I can play the "R" chord with little effort at all.

Over the years I have grown to appreciate Steely Dan a lot, great musicianship has always been one of the keys to thier sound, however for some reason I have always found them boring.

Give me some good ole raw Bon Scott AC/DC!

Steely Dan to me is a sit back and sip your cocktail kind of music.

Not a bang your head and break some beer bottles kind.

If ya know what I mean.

A cerebral band for sure. We used to spend many nights trying to interpret their lyrics. This one had special meaning:

Rose darling come to me
Snake Mary dreams along
I would guess she's in Detroit
With lots of money in the bank
Although I could be wrong
You must know it's right
The spore is on the wind tonight
You won't feel it till it grows

As did this one:

We hear you're leaving, that's OK
I thought our little wild time had just begun
I guess you kind of scared yourself, you turn and run
But if you have a change of heart:

Rikki Don't Lose That Number
You don't wanna call nobody else
Send it off in a letter to yourself
Rikki don't lose that number
It's the only one you own
You might use it if you feel better
When you get home
