fisherman bob wrote:PaperDog you're killing me again. You say that ALL the working bass players in your area are playing different genres so they CAN'T play your genre. Or they are not qualifed to play your genre. That's B.S. I'm a bass player in a blues band but I'm quite capable of playing ANY genre. I've GIGGED with classic rock bands UNREHEARSED. I've done studio work for a red dirt country band. So you would write me off as somebody unqualified for your project. I'll bet there's DOZENS of bass players in your town highly qualified and willing to work with you. I'll bet that many aren't even in bands, the economy being what it is. How about calling the music stores and contacting guitar/bass instructors and see if one of them might be willing to take on a side project. For that matter start contacting lead guitarists and see if they would play bass for you? Go on local band websites and send them emails telling them about your situation with a link to some of your recordings. ASK if they know of any bass players. Their own bass player might even be willing to take on a second project. A few years ago we had a problem with a lead guitarist. I asked a friend of mine if I could talk to his lead guitarist about filling in for my unreliable guitarist. He said sure and now he's the lead guitarist in my band. Working muscians know people in the music business. Start talking to more of them and chances are you'll get the right person involved.
Typical Bob. Always insightful with a good direction. Don't know 'em, butcha' gotta love him. That's why we're here! :D

There was an outfit called Evie Brickell and the New Bohemians who used an acoustic electric bass - pretty nice as I recall. You might google them and get a hint. don't know off the top of my head.

Thanks Mike. It was "Edie" Brickell They were hot back when, but I haven't heard much from them since the late 80's. Based on the official Video ("What I am") , It looks like the bassist was using a Fender Electric. (I will research em more)

I started writing songs with Brad Houser to put a band together in 81. I didn't like the other guitarist that he added later so I left the band. A few years later they added Edie Brickell and went on to have that big hit. Few people know that it was because Paul Simon was romantically interested in Edie, who is now his wife.

Brad's bass and a couple of lead solos were the only band members actually appearing on their "hit" CD, with the rest being studio musicians brought in by the producer. Admittedly, we weren't close friends but I don't remember Brad ever playing an upright? He did hang upside down in a hammock as a religious ritual of some sort though.

Back then, Jack Barton of Reverend Horton Heat played upright better than anyone in Texas, I thought.

I'd bet there are a few dozen great bass players in El Paso looking for a gig. They don't hang out in kareoke bars though :-)

IMO, you ought to get yourself a bass and start working on it. COuldn't hurt to know the bass position and, as you're finding out, a good bass player is very valuable.

Yes indeed my friend... I have already started pricing the Acoustics... and when I tried one out this last Saturday, I actually felt at home with it... Only a matter of time now, bro!
I went down to the Perculator, and it was like watching South Park. Ha ha!. Don't get me wrong, the kid on that stage was busting his ass, and he had his full heart into what he was doing... But Much as I love the Marlyn Manson genre, its not me.. and what I'm trying to get done (right now)

The Kings X...forget about that one...Its all hard-luck and drama in there.

I even tried one of the local churches...(via a friend of mine who passed the word on about my search... Nothing, Nada...El Zippo.. The list goes on... and on

I could play the bass but who wants to?
I find it boring and the strings hurt my fingers.
Maybe check out some bass pedals,
or better yet a piano player that plays bass pedals and sings
and has a van and 2 beautiful sisters
If your going folkie I'd just play the bass line
On my guitar
pick, strum, strum pick, strum, strum

Hey just a thought, you would probably get more readers if you interviewed controversial people for your blog.

Lynard

I started out as a bass player and i'm looking at a bass gig now. However, the last 3 years I've really focosed on guitar - from the perspective of neo-classical metal. Seemed the best way to get good quick although that is obviously debateable. At any rate i've learned to do some wild and wacky things at speeds I never dreampt i'd be playing. Lot of fun.

But when I pick up that bass I can tell you for sure that I am not bored. I try not to play with folks who would tolerate a boring bass player.

I agree that Bass is a bit harder to play in some ways, easier in others I think.

Maybe the difference is that I played bass first and picked up guitar along the way.

Though I am a guitarist, I feel comfortable with the bass. I know I will need to learn some techniques, but I have a good feel for the deep, richness that a bass produces... With practice, I will hopefully become respectable player in my own right.

One plays bass and becomes familiar with synching the beat to what's being played, as well as learning the bass lines/backbone for most tunes.

You can always tell a guitarist that didn't play bass as they tend to NOT play to the rest of the band as quickly as someone who did.

Talbot,

I guess as a kid I started as a bass player.
And far as boring bass players seems like the bass
line on most songs is written boring, you know
Dum, dum Dum, dum Dum, Dum
And I can see the need for that in the song
it just sounds to me like it would be boring to play.

Man it's been hard tolerating any bass player,
are they all women chasing drunks (ie. sometimes I'm
there with them)

Still I could play the bass but the strings hurt my fingers.
I'm a guitar player trying to play piano that doesn't sing very well

If bass is boring then you aren't playing it correctly, and there are other bass players that aren't like that --- however, in your defense, I know quite a few who are drunks.

Dog, just hang in there and keep at it. I really want a keyboard player and I can find a tuba player faster than that. But I'm patient. And for me, our bass player has been a big source of inspiration for us.

I don't know how to play the bass correctly
Come on tho don't most of them just play on the
accented beat.
I got nothing against bass players
I just don't want to do it

Lynard,

I would agree that'some bass players sort of just 'follow' the direction of a given song, while others command it.. That's the big difference. I hope to fall amongst the latter.
