General Music Chat

From my perspective. If anyone gives a crap. I started out as a classical violinst at 11 years of age it was not pretty (the horse hairs) on that bow can be a bit like fingernails on a blackboard LOL! Fortunately for my mom that didn't last very long! Being from Texas naturally I levitated to Bob Wills and the twin Fiddles (poor Miss Hertzer) After that I dicovered Rock & Roll. Anyway my point is that the natural progression of musical preference is JAZZ! Oh My GAWD! there are some Jazzers down here in H-Town that will BLOW your mind.

DID I mention that this weekend is the HOUSTON JAZZ FESTIVAL OMG Kyle Turner the Man on SAX! I am getting Goose Pimples just thinking ABOAT IT!

Hey all. Yup I'm a newb. I've always liked jazz singers. I'm more blues/rock based but would love to fuse into jazz one day. The latest being Amy Winehouse. I've heard some of her music before her death, but decided to download more of her music and learn more about this interesting woman. She truly was a gem and her music and vocal style is outstanding. The most genuine vocals I've heard in a long time. So cool she was able to cross jazz with modern pop. And more sexual and honest than any of the pop divas. True genious. Her band is brilliant as well. I believe her music will live on for along time. Awesome

Thanks for that Jeff. I must admit, nothing makes me more competitve than seeing another black woman play flute...don't ask me why. I remember when I first saw Bobbi Humprey in a jazz magazine. I remember taking the magazine and sticking it in the back of all the other magazines, hoping no one sees it. I love Althea's playing though. I need to get a mic like hers. Vocal mics suck for wind players.

Yeah, it's too bad that her demons got the best of her, but her spirit will linger just like Jimi's and Janis'.

Oh, and another thing, nearly all jazz players began with the blues.

Big fan of jazz here as well but sometimes i feel like I'm in the minority at least in my area.
I remember the first time i came to truly realize the huge amount of skill and musical knowledge it takes to be a jazz musician and it made me appreciate the genre even more.
I have been toying around with the idea of mixing the style with more unconventional instruments but that will have to wait until i find a band.
