I hear a lot of shredders simply playing scales for rides and chops. That can get to be a tad boring to listeners. I do what some others have posted.
I just play the songs I like and work out the details as I develop the song. Playing scales, playing songs.... it's all practice no matter how you look at it.
Maybe for some that doesn't give you bragging rights for how many scales you can play, or how fast you can play, but it improves your technique, touch and knowledge of the fingerboard. And when you are using your skills to play piece of music, that IS the bottom line. :)

Just brought this subject up because there's one guy in my area that plays in multiple bands and brings down a ton of friends and relatives. He is the sloppiest player I've ever seen in the clubs... Brags about never practicing (as some folks on here do) and it shows! The worst part is a lot of guitarists forget about their right hand and depend on a lot of pull off's and hammer ons. It's funny when you hear the actul critique about this gentleman when he's not around. He's got tons of friends who just wanna party together and they don't care....neither do the club as they're making their money!

I'm not looking for any ego boosting..don't want it..I know where I stand.. I'm just very curious as to how musicians actually go about practicing...or if they just play the tunes and that's it.

My dad was a big time trumpet player with Benny Goodman and Harry James and ,many others and I guess his "old school" way of practicing rubbed off on me as well as all my private and college music teachers.

Crip

I practice with my bass a couple hours a week just to keep my chops alive - that could change since I'm thinking of looking for a local outfit that plays out. Somebody always needs a bass player.

Most of my work is with my six string. I have a strat but it sounds as much like a Gibson as I've ever heard - Seymour Duncan pup that screams.

I practice 1-3 hrs per day working through scales, modes, tutorials and so on. I play the 'big four' which are the next four tunes I want to record and if I have time I work on other songs to keep them fresh in my mind.

Part of that always turns in to perfecting some minor (or major) element of a song that I just thought could be better.

up to six hours on Sat and Sun - I stay up later than my wife and my practice studio is behind the house.

i'm working pretty hard because I've become entranced by playing like the big guys do. While sticking to rock/metal I want the freedom the classical players have - the freedom that comes from technical expertise, theory and repitition.

I saw two guys on youtube the other night playing a Vivaldi piece where their guitars sounded like the whole violin section and thought 'hell yeah! - I want some of that." A long journey and I'm no spring chicken, but going after the neo-classical metal etc ability level seems a worthy goal. And it is reflected in being able to play better when doing blues, rock or ocuntry.

Bad side of that is I always feel terribly incompetant and know I need more education and time. Education I can scrounge off the net but time? It waits for no one.

Very cool and instructive lesson but that is definitely something I would have liked to learn one on one live with the teacher right there in front of me so we could master it live and together and then have the teacher show how to use is in a song at a much quicker and smoother pace to make it more exciting for the student.

If you went to my college and took the courses on arpeggios, what you just showed would have already been used after intense instruction on long, short, major and minor arpeggios and how to implement them in everyday improvisation in all sorts of chord structures be it jazz, rock, classical etc..

But if you had a student that was patient enough and doesn't bore easily, then it would be helpful... but I noticed most of my former students wanted to learn how to wail and perform without always having to concentrate so much on all the inside technique of the tools I already showed them! They would eventually use those arps naturally after perfecting the exercises I made them repeat as their normal routine!

It was a blast watching my students actually implement what I taught them when I would just play rhythm and let them go at it!

You keep them longer that way. This is strictly a "teaching for money" advice!

Mike.... there are soooo many artists out there on you tube thqt frustrate the hell outta me because I would love to master their way of playing....but it ain't happening...like they say...to each his own....but I feel no matter what, You have to always exercise the ole digits to at least perform a decent lead guitar. Basically, it's like going to a gym to keep in shape... I try to keep the hands limber by exercising them routinely!

I have strict long lessons on there. I have videos on mechanics as well. This is for people that can "play" but need help using what they know. The thought process behind the playing is just as important as technique.

I taught for years and trust me it takes a long time to get someone who just bought a guitar to play what I was showing. But everyone that views my videos isn't a newbie and don't need extensive videos on scales and arpeggios.

My lessons are free online, so That gives me the freedom to teach what I feel like at the moment.

I'd like to think that I do more than bore people with my videos.

Oh no please don't get me wrong...I understand your vids and they do't bore me...but you're limiting your lessons to only the already pro players! Believe it or not, you make more money teaching beginners or amateurs ( who would honestly be super bored of anything you or I would put up as a vid lesson in arps, scales,etc..) as to more "progressive" players really will just skim over your video and not take it apart...

Here's a vid that someone as myself would really try to master and perfect:

This actually teaches the more experienced guitarist!

I learned that about 8 years ago...

I have basic lessons on my site. such as: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYFMGxkewDI

I pick apart some stuff and explain the theory, like Yngwie's "Evil Eye": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wBduBlj ... re=related

So, I am trying to hit a variety of audiences. I really do think there is relatively "something for everybody" on my youtube channel. Except for those who don't care that is...

Very cool... I'm not here to bash you as it seems you're taking it. My main objective of this thread was to get some ideas and insight on how peeps practice..nothing more, nothing less. You can be AWESOME or mediocre or a beginner as I honestly don't give a flying fuk

With that said:. it seems as youve turned this thread for your own "advertising" and ego inflation. You obviously don't know me very well here as I've been waay too kind to you!

Stop promoting your fukkin' self on my thread as no one gives a rat's ass! It's all about how others go about practicing! Not how great they THINK they are or how much better they are than others! It's about HOW THEY PRACTICE?? THAT'S IT!

YIKES! How you turned this thread into your own inflated ego is beyond me. Get out there and perform...Make peeps smile! kick some ass! If you're teaching online for free then that's because no one will pay you!
You're not in any way, shape or form a rock star... Act as such an have some respect and discretion for other that want to join this thread without belittling anybody here! If you don't like someone's style...WHO GIVES A SH¡T? It's their style be it super fast shredding or slow blues.

THIS THREAD IS ABOUT HOW ONE APPROACHES THIER PRACTICE SESSION! NO MORE....NO LESS!

I was making conversation with fellow musicians. I wrote that lesson on melody and approach to explain a previous comment on this thread and posted a link to show what I was talking about.

I don't have an ego. I just love talking music and helping if I can.

Trust me, I'm being nice and holding back on my thoughts, but I won't curse you and down your comments or video advertising.

Maybe it's guitar envy. But you don't need to be so angry about it. Good luck. Wish you the best.

Guitar envy..     I've got a Mortgage, 2 teenage sons (one seriously handicapped), a wife and a ton of bills that are a helluva lot more important than my guitar "hobby"

#1. There was no "video advertising" Just did it off the cuff right before I practiced... Sloppy? IMMENSELY. It was just to show how I go about my routine before I start

#2. You've automatically put certain guitarists down with your "mightier than though" expertise on fast "Shredding" again.... THIS THEAD WAS ABOUT PRACTICE!

and lastly .... do a count on your posts promoting your "lessons" You've obviously haven't checked out a slew of guitarists on this site but they would put your"lessons" to shame! At least I admit it! I only picked the axe up a few years ago after over a 2 decade reprieve without even touching the axe.

It's not about how good a guitarist is.. That's for other threads

Again..I'm not a professional guitarist in the sense that it's my only job although I always get paid when playing out... I'm a 40 hour a week working stiff who enjoys playing but knows enough that it's just a hobby and there are awesome pro's out there that blow me away... for the 4th time

IT'S ABOUT HOW BANDMIX MEMBERS GO ABOUT PRACTICING! THATS IT!
