...Raquel Nelson. I feel very bad for this woman who got totally screwed over by the American "justice" system.

Not only has she lost her 4 year old son to a drunk driver, but she has faced one STUPID trial, in which she was found "guilty" of vehicular manslaughter, reckless endangerment, &...get this...JAYWALKING!

Fortunately, the judge saw how STUPID all of this sh*t is, & has offered her the option of a year's probation with public service, or another trial. (The drunk driver got a mere 6 months in jail, while Raquel faced up to 3 YEARS for her part in the incident!)

I can't imagine the COST incurred for this crap on a grieving mother (&/or us taxpayers)...let alone the stress of TWO trials over such a trifling mistake, as to cross the street at the wrong spot in front of the wrong damned driver.

Saw her on the news today, & was amazed at how she forgave the driver who killed her son, & injured both her & her daughter. What a woman!

...And what a F*CKED UP system we have in place that could do this to someone!

Typical of the so-called justice system we have. I had a good friend who was killed by a drunk driver at a red light in Bryan, Texas years ago. I Had a date with her 2 nights later...her friend, who was driving, said she saw the guy with a beer can turned up as he hit their car doing 60MPH in a 35 zone. He got 6 months, she got a funeral. I lost someone I loved. Her friend who was driving had a lot of trouble dealing with it, unfortunately I didn't get a chance to talk to her much, she didn't like me at all and made no secret about it. At least she was decent enough to tell me what happened and be civil to me when I came by where they both worked (both bartenders) to find out where my date was...

I didn't hear about this so I don't know any details, but if the guy was drunk he should have gotten a lot more than 6 months, it was probably not his first time to get in trouble for drinking. The guy in the incident above already had a DWI under his belt.

The courts are too lenient, prison is no longer a punishment or a deterrent. 60% of all ex-cons are back in prison within 2 years, most within 6 months. Just one more glaring sign that our world is in serious trouble.

Politicians working for corporate interests instead of ours, food corporations putting chemicals in our food to make us fat and addicted to it (look up MSG sometime), schools not educating our kids, rap, kids walking around with their butts hanging out of their pants, lawsuits filed over any little thing, most of them frivolous, jobs going overseas, illegal aliens grabbing the few available, politicians and corporations helping them stay here, cheap Chinese garbage is all you can buy, poisons still being sprayed all over every crop in my area daily, gangs out of control in most large cities, money more important than even human life...

Our world is in serious trouble, we're headed for hell in a handbasket in a big hurry. This is just one more incident that confirms it.

She ... and she alone stands responsible for her actions.

The driver ... if indeed his intoxication was a factor.
Should have been hung.

I think you and many others here know how I feel about judges and lawyers. It is stuff like this that explains my current sentiments

The driver admitted to drinking and taking prescription painkillers, plus he had prior hit-and-runs on his record.

How many of us have kids and have had one of them break away from us?

This woman was watching for cars, they were stopped on the median but her son broke away from her. What difference would it have made if she was between the white lines? Here in CA, white lines don't mean anything, these people will turn in front of you whether you're cross the street or not. It's easy for a little kid to break away and run ahead and a car could be turning at the wrong moment.

Also, they have crosswalks here that have no lights. I can't tell you how many times I've skidded to a stop because I can frickin' see these people because they have a tendency to blend in with the scenery. So a crosswalk doesn't mean jack really and since this guy admits to being under the influence I don't think a crosswalk would've much mattered because he would've seen the people standing on the median and slowed down in the first place.

Naomi could've been hit on a parking lot when she broke away from me trying to get to the store. Luckily there was no car? Should I have been prosecuted if she'd gotten hit? Should I have maybe handcuffed her to me? Chained her? I mean, WTF?

The comments on the newsboards are horrendous just crucifying this woman and then assuming she's on welfare. I'm so sick of stupid people.

I knew better when I was a kid ... my mom dad would kick my ass.

Overheard a conversation between my father and our neighbor in around 1965.
The neighbor asked my father how he kept all his kids from playing out in the streets because he just could not seem to control his own.

My father, without even the slightest change in voice inflection said.
" Give me a week and a good belt, I can keep you out of the street."

Last time I ever recall that neighbor coming to visit.

My point being ... she was the adult in the situation ... she is responsible.

We just had some jackass chick who left her infant son in the care during triple digit weather and then wondered why she got arrested.

People are stupid but that's no excuse..

Yeah well leaving your kid in the car is a whole 'nother thing. I can be a real dingbat at times, but there's no way I could've left my kid in the car. I've never got that because whenever we've gone somewhere and the kids were little, the first thing we do is get them out of their carseats then get the packages. I used to help out at the school and we always did a head count both going, coming back and returning to the school. Even when I get out of the car I can see in the back seat even when driving the truck. I have never got that. I don't even leave my dogs in the car.

But you can't just go throwing parents in jail for every little thing. Some times there's some accidents. If anyone knows anything about autism is these kids are escape artists and she slipped out of the house with Cisco and then a second time with me watching her. Luckily, we live in a park so people found her.

Of course, I'm responsible, I'd have to live with whatever happens. I can say right now that every parent, EVERY PARENT on this planet has done something to endanger their child either out in public or at home. EVERY ONE of them. So can't nobody sit here and talk about this woman. They haven't watched every second what their kids were doing because its impossible to watch 24/7 what your kids are doing. My parents were reasonably strict but I could write a book about all the sh*t we used to get into, and we were just darn lucky nothing ever happened to us. Every parent has had to deal with something that they never thought their kids would have the nerve to do. One time I went to my grandmother's house with my parents, it's a one way street, there are no crosswalks. I ran ahead and my mom's cousin was taking off and he almost hit me. Of course, my parents yelled at me and I got smacked, but what if I had gotten hit or killed, what would that have done? Should they have gone to jail? Every one of us does something stupid every day. Should we all be convicted for it? How far are we willing to take it?

Just the other day, I had Jace on my lap while I was driving my car. It was fun. It was a deserted dead end road, but let;s face it - it still wasn't a "smart" thing to do. If I'd been seen by the powers that be, I'd have been hit with...how many charges? Reckless endangerment, no seat belts, underage driver, yadda yadda yadda... Yeah, it was a Briitney Spears moment for me! You got a problem with THAT?

They were willing to send someone to JAIL for 3 years for JAYWALKING?

How perfect they must be, to be willing to do that to someone! This country has such a burr up its ass that we may never see sanity again!

Every parent has had to deal with something that they never thought their kids would have the nerve to do. Was at a Del Mar fair one year (my son was 5) and we lost him in the crowd... I though I was gonna have a heart attack... We were under a large tent with two exits... I told my wife to post herself at the front asap and keep watch... I covered the back and did a sweep forward. About midway, I found him under one of the long tables... He was just goofing around under there... Man!! Talk about relieved... You better believe his little ass went on a leash after that.. And yeah I took a lot of criticism for the leash thing. I tell ya something else... If something bad had happened to that child, I would have asked for my own death penalty.. Some how, doing jail time would have been nothing, compared to my sense of loss.

Doing something stupid on a daily basis, and doing something stupid that gets someone killed are two completely different matters.

Negligent homicide is a crime.

I never said we weren't responsible - my point like Philby said, if we tried our best in a situation or showed earnest that we meant well, should we go to jail - on top of dealing with the death of our child - and sit on your tax dollars in a cell next to a criminal who willfully and maliciously chose to break the law?

That's my point.

People don't understand taking public transportation. You come home with three kids, it's late and you're frickin' tired. This woman meant well, I believe, but it went horribly wrong. She has to live with her decision for the rest of her life. She will not spend a day not thinking "what if" she had gone down to the crosswalk. That's her penance.

I know people who are dealing with the death of a child and you can't imagine the hell you have when you feel somehow responsible.

Now you want to talk about assholes - a man was arrested today for letting his 8yo son drive his pick up while he slept drunk next to him with his 4 year old sister in the backseat. They were in Lousiana headed for Texas. You wanna put someone on trial and in jail, it should be dumbfuckers like that!
