This is kind of heart-breaking for me because I really feel for this kid. I have my 10 yo daughter and frequently keep her 10 yo friend. They're kids! I can only imagine what this young boy is going through.

I'm left wondering if the stepmom didn't have anything to do with this. I just have a hard time thinking that a 10 year old would think that all he has to do is take a gun and kill his dad because he abused him and his stepmom. Something is kind of fishy here. I don't agree with them bringing the kid in a prison jumpsuit and shackled. It's really sad.

Every time a gun is used... we have to wonder... was the damn thing locked away properly, etc etc... Its tragic that this kid decided that somehow it's okay to blow his father's brains all over the couch.

When I was 10, make no mistake, I was cognizant, fully aware of the difference between right and wrong, and I was not given any margin to entertain an abstract / feel-good version about the dangers of a gun... In fact I got my ass whipped harshly for sneaking off with my dad's .38 to go target shooting in the desert when I was 10.

I feel for the kid, but his own rationale turned south...Even in the event of abuse, which seems to be the magic argument for anybody that ever gets caught in a criminal act.. that does not justify the taking of another life. Where did he learn to believe that it was okay?

Something is kinda fishy here. Damn right!
The kid just stepped up and became a man.
Killing ain't never pretty. But when it needs to be done, it needs to be done.

Dog who the heck says the rational wasn't there.
At ten I would have shot the crap out of anyone abusing a family member.
Lock up your guns... same as take them away.

You better watch more of the 'RIFLEMAN' starring Chuck Connor on Saturday mornings. He would never lock up a the one thing that protected him from idiots.

You know, I can be one Hot headed mother f**k, (and I am not afraid to throw down when I'm cornered...) But In all my rage, I can't see killing somebody where i absolutely don't have to. In fact, there is only one reason I can think of, that justifies me killing somebody else...and that's if they are trying to kill me (or mine) ...

Now don't get me wrong... For lesser reasons, I will dislocate, mutilate and cripple somebody in a heart beat over the last piece of chocolate in the house... But poppin a cap in somebody's head? I can't see it.

At ten I had the knowledge, skill set, and the weapon.

Damn right, I'd killed his ass too.

My father did not have to worry about such.

First off, I feared my father ( same way a man should fear his God )

Secondly, my father taught me respect and responsibility by example.

He had no need to lock up his guns.

Cool Sans, Obviously your father didn't live in fear of a spider on the wall.
Must have done some good things, you didn't turn out so bad.

I'd be willing to bet not even the boy knows.

I'd be willing to bet a ton of abuse to everyone the kid loves.
We are not talking about spankings or chores or verbal abuse.
We are talking about no way out.

I can't jump to that conclusion, Glen. Yeah, it's possible...perhaps even statistically probable...but until someone delves into the case & comes up with some real answers, all I can do is sit here without judgement & shake my head sadly at the stupidity of it all.

Never had locked guns in my house - not as a kid, & not as an adult. There's a loaded one sitting about 3 feet away from where I sit at the moment, in fact (though Jace can't get to it or see it...nor does he know it exists).

They said the kid had been in trouble before, mainly with anger issues. I think we were all afraid of our dads. My dad had a loaded gun in his drawer next to his bed. He told me where it was and taught me to shoot it in case anyone tried to get in the house and they weren't there. I never went near that gun. I didn't like it. I'm glad no one tried to get in the house.
