It's not out of whack. For instance, yes, I'm going to my company's talent show to represent our office, Cisco's got a gig, so I'm being forced to do a Brittany and sing to tracks aka karaoke.

Once I did a karaoke version of "You Know I'm No Good" by Amy Winehouse. Everybody ran on the floor and started dancing and the next day this woman came up and told me that was better than Amy sang it. Wow!

I love karaoke, dont consider myself that great a singer but I can emulate a lot of different styles.

When I was doing the acoustic thing karaoke gave me a place to just try some new stuff to see if it suited me or not, plus some of the people i met from that would come to my acoustic shows and I would let them get up and sing with me, which gave me a break. SInging a 4 hour gig is tough on the old vocal chords.

I like what Prevost did, back up folks, do I have the patience for it probably not, I have a friend who host karaoke and I have subbed for him a few times and it drives me crazy hearing the same people sing the same songs, and still not get any better. But, with this guy if I show up for his shows he just picks songs at random for me to sing, kinda fun seeing if you can pull off a Zep, or AC/DC song now and then. Plus when I take my gal out I can serenade her with a few old Al Green or Sly songs and get her blood going. Shes built pretty good so this guy always gets me to sing Brickhouse while she dances.

Anyway I accept it, and like it for what it is. I always felt the more involved you can get an audience the more audience you can attract. My band we let others sing and play guitar, or whatever with us, but we have a pretty high standard and its very rare that someone gets up with us and turns into a trainwreck.

The karaoke singer has every much a right as a musician does to do what he likes to do. If a club hires a D J for karaoke, that is his business. I don't care how great any band thinks they are, or how much better any singer thinks he is because he sings with a live band. I have heard karaoke singers that would shame most singers in a band. So what? It's like comparing apples and oranges. Did I like it when DJ's started booking clubs? No. But it isn't about the way we think it should be for our own selfish interests, rather it is what it is, the freedom to perform when and where we want to perform.

Besides, I have heard some singers in bands that sounded equally as bad as a bad karaoke singer. A lot of clubs only had juke boxes before live music was popular. I don't remember the juke box crowd whining about live music.
If I was a singer I wouldn't have a problem with it either. Live entertainment is live entertainment. A singer with a band isn't any better or any worse because of the format of music they choose to back them.

Thatbeing said I have not been exposed to much KARAOKE

What I have been exposed to sucked really bad.

People whom can't sing, should not.

But that seems to be a big part of the fun of kareoke...listening to the bad singers makes people a little less intimidated to get up and try it.

And, really, that's why kareoke bars are proliferating everywhere while live music venues are not. Because it's FUN for the people in the audience.

And I was laughing (and having fun) at quite a few of them in El Paso with the Paper Dog....whereas I might have been angry had I paid to hear a band with a singer like that.

Judging by the poll votes here, there are more musicians singing kareoke that I would have thought.

I don't sing either that's why I love Karaoke. I take advantage of an opportunity, where no one in their right mind would ask me to sing. But it doesn't matter, I can sing and people are forced to sit and listen to me

He used to look good to me but now I find him......Simply Irrisistable! :D

Wowzers. A lot of karaoke haters. You get bad singers in karaoke and in bands. Karaoke is not all bad. I don't think karaoke can ever take away from a good live performance, which is the most important thing.

I am in Vegas tonight and sitting at a karaoke that is going strong at 1 AM in a huge casino. Everyone I've heard so far is really good. Some chick is singing "I like big butts" now.

Oh wait..... There is a bad version of mustang sally. I'm outta here...

I did it for fun once. I'm sure I annoyed people or shocked them when I growled to the lyrics than singing them like they thought =). -lol-
