No, we don't. We know absolutely no one. But we can be door to door salesman and hope like hell our business card and demo cd will bring them in to buy drinks. What a stupid question, I mean we ain't college boys no more and this is the first band I've put together in ten years. Put us on the bill on a Friday or Saturday night and there will be a packed house just because its the weekend. And, they will all be given promo materials and our Facebook site. Since the weekend is heavy rock metal time, we will blow the roof off. But if you think people are gonna pack the house on a lousy Tuesday night, you are living in a dream world. My fantasy is to become so popular that club that rejected us will stand to lose a lot of money by not booking us. And when they do, I will get in the club managers face and tell him what a complete superficial jefk he is and if he thinks taking the issue outside is in order, he'l find out that Toxic knows how to take care of himself and wreck that son of a bitch in all of ten seconds. You know, its clubs like that... which deserve to lose a night of business from the fact that you;ll play at a nearby competing club for free. (just to screw em) Figure, if ya gotta put up with that kinda crap then at least do the proving on your own terms and let them see your following...the harder way.

Paper for the record we dont play that game anymore, we dont have to, we get our business from old friends that hire us for private stuff at a set price.

But if you have a new band you have to prove yourself over and over again, just watch some of the groups that play at South By Southwest every year in Austin, some of them come from some major groups but they go there to play for free so people will see what they have.

Music is business, if a club can get talent cheaper then they have the right to do that. I dont get everyones beef, everyone seems to think just because they can play a few songs then they are entitled to being paid top money. It is what it is

Perhaps you are barking up the wrong tree. The local chapter of the Hells Angeles used to come in to hear our band on a regular basis. They drank more than anyone, seldom got into a fight, and had a great time.
On the other hand, average Joe Citizen who could seldom handle his booze caused trouble far more times.

I rode a bike to The Sturgis Rally and Races 17 years in a row without missing one. Naturally, you have breakdowns of one nature or another from time to time. The posers used to sail right past, the Hells Angels never failed to stop to help out a biker. And after about 15 years of riding up there on a bike, I took a three wheeler, ( I needed to take my dog with in later years) Even though a three wheeler is far harder to handle than a bike, I still wanted to go. I always carried the spare parts that usually caused trouble with me, so I did quite a few tuneups and the likes without need of assistance.
But still, when I would stop for any minor repair, again it was the Hells Angel who would stop to ask if I needed help.

Of all the "bikers" on the road, the Hells Angeles were the first ones to stop and help any biker broken down along side of the road. And they didn't care what you were riding. You shouldn't be giving those guys a bad rap.

I'm sure a few other bikers on here have had the same experiences.

Anything for a bike ride. I agree Slacker. I've never hardly ever seen a fight started by bikers. They just wanna ride everything

That's nice that they stopped to help you like that... I guess it really depends on what Chapter you deal with...Each one is different. Like, who would of thought they'd do security at a Stones concert and shoot a rucus-maker to death. Now the real Hells-Angels come out of WWII. You won't see them gang-banging Drugs , sex and guns, like the younguns do today. So, I guess age is also a factor. And by the way... They have the best recruiting methods in the world...Wouldn't ya know...They need Bike-riders...and so who do ya think they are gonna stop and help...? (One exception was a Hot chick I know, who drove a Miata)

A following is an elusive thing. Most people do not show up to every gig. We probably have hundreds of people who would say they are a fan of the band but can only count on 30-50 on any given night. This is why we only play 1-2 shows a month.

Slacker, do you know a band called "Slick Machine"? He's played Sturgis quite a few times. He rides too. I see him at NAMM every year.

It's the same CO that blew our agent off because we played a venue down the street and we were "catering to his competition".

If that's the case......it's not anything to get upset over. HE has every right to ask that question...and even expect you to bring a following. HE'S NO DUMMY.

What you need to understand is.....your pay (from him) isn't really going to change even if you do bring in a crowd.

(I worked this club every week for quite some time a few years ago).

FWIW.

First, I got NO problem with the Hells Angels. They kicked ass in the war back in the 60s and they were quite a bit more dangerous in that decade. But lets take the Oakland Chapter that began when Sonny Barger
had enough of normal life in a sh*t hole surburan neighborhood and got on his Harley and hit the road. He broke down on highway 1 (I believe) and a fellow HA biker came to his rescue. The mutual bond was there from the get go and Sonny, being the shrewd and badass motherfucker that he was, started the Oakland Chapter and even set the rules for how it was gonna be in the club house: no swearing during meetings, no fighting etc. He knew what he was doing and he did it balls to the wall right. That guy was NO ONE to mess with, he fought hard and he fought dirty and he played hard to. I think being in a biker gang is pretty damn cool: do what you want, when you want, answer to no one and do as many drugs and drink as you f**k care to. So get that nice and sparking clear.

How the hell do you get a following, that's my question. If you start with nothing how do manage to find people who will fill the club? As I said, I am a loner, I could careless if I know more than one good friend. Now Im supposed to be Mr. Extrovert and talk to everyone I meet, talk up a storm about my band, come see us and all that. I'll need some REALLY GOOD DRUGS to pull that off, and if you think that's a moronic statement then too bad. That's me, and I live the way I want to, as Jimi Hendrix once said. Even if he's no longer with us.
