Thanks for your thoughts Slacker I'm going to look at a used one today. It's a 90's version i believe made in Japan.

If you are finding cracks in the same place on different guitars of the same model, I sure wouldn't go near them. It could be a systematic production problem. If you are finding cracks on numerous models in the same place, buyer beware. Pay a bit more and go for a better one made somewhere else.
I like Epiphone guitars and have several of them. I haven't had any problems with them. These guys give them a really good review.

I know that Les Pauls have a very weak head joint, and have seen many that have broken that area when only falling from a guitar stand. I have two of Pauls (never dropped) so I am extremely careful when I set one down.
