You probably saw these but darker. He is lighter because he just popped out of his old exoskeleton.

Aren't those guys underground like 17 years before they emerge? I love cicadas.

There are several species with different cycle lengths. But we always have some of these here. When I was in TN recently there was a 13 year cicada explosion. it was totally deafening. Reports of permanent hearing damage!!

Great pictures Paul.

When I was a kid I loved to collect the exoskeletons.
I had a big piece of cardboard with them glued to it.
Arranged like two opposing football teams just before the snap.

Haha! That's awesome! When I was in my 20's I used to try to always have a couple riding on my dash. :D

It's REALLY deafening when Cicadas with different cycles all emerge in the same year. We have tons of them in Kansas City.

I hear them all year long, even in my house in the dead of winter. The noise I hear constantly in my ears sounds exactly like they do on a summer night.

One spring night I was standing outside and heard them louder than usual, and it took a minute to realize that they were the ones living in my ears. It was way too early in the year for the real deal.

Nice pics. I find their empty exo's attached to the trees around my house all the time. They're really cool looking creatures. :)

Don't know how I managed that double post, sorry about that...

Slacker I've been listening to the same thing all my life. Thought I was the only one...but they're here, right now...loud and clear...drives me batty sometimes, along with that damn little guitar player that's always there too...

There are a lot of humming birds around here. They hover around the Birds of Paradise mostly. You could get plenty of cool shots with the right camera.

A few years ago I found a dead one laying in the street near my house. He looked perfect like nothing was wrong with it, absolutely beautiful. I felt so sad. I took him home and buried him in my yard and gave him back to the Earth. I hope he's happy now.

When I was a kid, we had a feeder hanging in the back porch, and Was sitting just under it. Well this little green humming bird scoots right up to my face...eye to eye...from nowhere...He hovered for about 20 seconds and suddenly dropped square onto the cushion of my chair. Its like he just quit and died. So I very gently picked it up and rested it my palm ..very shortly thereafter it starts kicking its little feet , shakes its lil head...looks up at me... and then takes off like nothing ever happened... It was such a happy moment!
