I just used country as an example while trying to make a point. I have very broad tastes when it comes to music which includes country. I've recorded some of my own country stuff. There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism "when asked". Some people on music forums have Simon Cowell syndrome and go out of there way to pick apart or criticize anything that's posted whether they are asked or not. Personally, I don't go out of my way to tell an ugly woman she's ugly even if asked but I'm more apt to tell a pretty woman she's pretty though.

KLUGMO, I'm always tripping over my own tongue. I was just using your music as an example to make a point on how not to critique someones stuff with useless sarcasm as opposed to actually being helpful. When I listen to someone stuff I don't offer anything unless asked. I listen to it as a whole and I either like it or I don't. As a whole I really like the stuff you have up. It's well done and I enjoyed it. When I listened to your songs I was taking it all in and not looking for faults. I do have a habit of focusing in on the guitar work though. It's not my thing to put it under a microscope break it down and critique parts of it. Could I have told Johnny Cash that his vocals were not that great or that Jimmy Page was a sloppy guitar player when as a whole there stuff was brilliant?

Mike's playing is bullet proof.

Mike and klugmo both pointed out the disappointing extremes of critiques.
1. Being too nice and therefore not helping the person looking for critiques.
2. Delighting in cutting someone down and likewise not helping.

I can be hard on folks but only when they are jerks or defensive as in the "born a felony" thread. I tend to try to be tender yet honest as often as possible. Sometimes I am guilty of liking the person too much. Then it's harder to be helpful and tell it like it is. I still try to.

Those are good picks but I would probably add Roy Clark at the top of the list myself.

Bullet proof? I wish! I'll critique myself. I tend to noodle the sh!t out of everything. How's that! Paul, your just a big softy like me. I try to find the good in everything as opposed to the bad.

When I get on here and say anything about peoples music the first thing I think of is what level player is this anyway?

If its someone just trying to get going, then I give them a lot of lee way, if the recording is bad or not doesnt matter to me, from a beginner garage band player the big thing is having the guts to put your music out there.

Now if I know someone is advanced then I will get a little deeper.

Genres to me dont matter much either, if someone post something that is outside what I consider something I really like I say this isnt my cup of tea, but I can appreciate it.

Now if someone post something and someone else says something that makes sense and the OP cops some crazy attitude with them, over obvious flaws then I will hammer the hell out of them. If they continue this and dont take any advice or at least maybe eat a little humble pie, then I just dont comment anymore.

Thats kinda why I rarely engage in politics or religion, I feel to each his own. I wouldnt want to be the person that made someone question thier own beliefs, and I also dont feel like this is a place that I should have to defend mine. I respect people here cause we all have a basic love of music and all seem to be trying to advance our musical skills.

Agreed. JW always keeps his cool. JW defines cool in person too.

This should stir the pot a little. Why do some people seem incapable
of knowing how awful they are at writing music.? Lyrics that are just
like a 4th graders first atempt at a poem. Melodies like oil and water
forced together. Instrumentation from a Klingon world somewhere.

Then there are the people that defend them. They will make comments
like not my cup of tea but keep at it. To me they would say don't
discourage someone from trying.
Or, it only matters that they are enjoying it. Or my favorite
"Don't Be A Hater"

I think a lot of people confuse Haters with people that tell the blunt, honest,
obvious and needed truth. I Love people like that. They keep the people
around them from being phony. They make the people around them
face their feelings and true thoughts about issues and topics. Most
people cant handle real honesty with everything and run and avoid them.

You can't please everyone all of the time. Me personally, Its gotten to where i really don't give a sh*t what people say about my music... It has to be like that , otherwise I'd buckle and die, waiting for approval. I'm very careful to not to sneer at others, (as I look around and realize I'm not busting any charts, myself.) Of course if I get engaged in a pissing contest, I will slice and dice, once, twice, thrice, clamp em down with a gnarly vice, heat em up and drop in Ice, needless to suffice (Does anybody got some rice?) ...heh! (Sorry got my 4th grader goin there)
As a general rule, I will NEVER offer my opinion about someone else's song unless I am explicitly asked. And even then, I'm gonna try and break down specific points that are useful and constructive.
I will NEVER ask anybody here what they think of my sh*t... unless I am prepared to have my ass whipped about it...
I find the best way through all of this is to be humble about it.

Yeah well, looking over what I previously said, sometimes I can just be a bitch. I don't have time for flat out stupidity. I tend to go easier on the young ones because I know they want help and they want to learn, but if you're over the age of 35 then you should frickin' know if your guitar is out of tune, if you have a crappy ass recording or if you have a whack ass song. I'm very busy and if someone is asking what I think then show respect to the people you're asking a critique from and not waste their time. If you're that clueless, you don't need to be in this business. One should strive to always put forth their best work. I mean if you have a crappy drum machine and a crappy recording equipment, you can still get a workable mix out of it and at least tell people you don't have much to work with. I mean, go to a recording studio and offer to do some work for them in exchange for a mix or something. If you're passionate about playing and getting your music out there, then you should be doing all that you can to get what you need done.

Frankly, I don't care what people think of my songs, they either like them or they don't, so I don't ask for critiques. But I do know that my stuff could be mixed better and get a better sound. I know it isn't mixed properly for radio airplay. Cisco and I are constantly working to better that aspect, but I will tell people from the getgo that it's a rough mix so it's a warning ahead.
