In a live show, passion. I can watch and listen to anyone play covers, and as long as they are having a good time, I can get off on that. I've seen 400 guys to Stormy Monday, and about half are trying to out-Allman Allman.
The worst is the 'human jukebox' or the 'live practice'
On a a recording, some of the same, but also integrity. a good recording is a good document that shows how mcuh you have control over that song and what you can do with it.
in both cases, HONESTY. If you are doing this becasue you love it and want to be understood, that's always cool. If you are doing it becasue its more fun than data entry, or this is how you get your dope, your a fake and that comes out pretty quick

Good topic....for me, I would simply say "emotion". It can vary from mood to mood, but ultimately the feeling of a song is what holds me. The lyrics, instruments and style all play their part, but it's mostly how a song makes me "feel" that really gets to me.

a song as a whole...

For me, a song is an expression of a state of being. Whether in a moment, memory or frame of mind. So I look for it all. Couldn't tell you the lyrics or guitar key for most any of my favorite songs. Don't think I could manage even 3.

peck234 Said the word I was looking for - Passion! Passion is a word we gel with love. As most of us know, it means a whole lot more. Guitars were my main focus. Some bands I didn't even like when they they had them and didn't know why. Keyboards. So many bands ruined it for me because they had them. Took me 'til my recent years to nail that. Not because I don't like keyboards/synths it's because usually the vocalist needed something for his hands to do and keyboards... Truth is I love keyboards when you put them in the right hands- such as Kevin- what's his face from REO SPEEDWAGON.

It depends on the song and it's ability to make me feel things when I'm listening to it. Some songs I'm totally into the instrumentation and others I love the singing and the others what the lyrics are saying. Sometimes it's both or all three.

I'm more of an air sign so I love listening to synthesizers, but that doesn't mean I can't get swept up into the power of guitars and soaring voices.

I don't have just one favorite style of music, so different things move me.
