jimmydanger wrote:You go girl? Watching a little too much Oprah buddy. A more proper thing to say to a fellow musician: Stay metal! Or at least Rock on!

There are two types of musicians; one who wants to be paid NOW and will play "Sweet Home Alabama" three times a night if necessary. The other type know this is a crap shoot, and instead look at it as their art/hobby/passion. If something should come from it great, but getting paid $100 for a night of playing crap is not enough for me to sacrifice my ideals.

First of all you are not my buddy.
second, I don't watch Oprah.
third, "you go girl", I was using that back in the 70s,way before Oprah.
Fourth, There you go again you crying little commie ass, control freak deluxe. Now you want to tell me how to talk to a fellow musician.

You are so amusing, you are so sad. :(

No, I'm not desperate, I'm realistic and I'm a business woman. Like Johnny said, playing the Roxy, the Viper Room and so forth looks good on my resume. Plus, you guys don't live in California. It's too big and attention spans are too short to try and get people at your gigs. You're in bumfuck Egypt, you have a low percentage of bands to compete with so it's easy to scoff at paying to play. You live in Southern California where you have thousands of bands playing every weekend, it's not easy to fill the room. It goes well beyond being bad ass, or at Jeff Beck's status. But I'm not playing at some shitty club, call me a snob for that. I'd rather fight to grow a following and aspire to get paid, because I'm not doing covers unless it works with my originals, I'm a snob like that too. I've been dragged along to too many jams, and I'm just over it.

I don't think you guys really understand how much money it costs to run a club. I've watched a bunch of shitty ones close up or get bought out and turned into sports bars down here in Orange County. Maybe not in your neck of the woods, but many clubs that feature live music are drying up. They can't hang At least four clubs Cisco used to play have closed within the last five years.

When you get clubs the size of the Roxy, Key Club, the Whiskey and the Viper Room, they are right next to Beverly Hills, so you can only imagine what their leases for the month are for that area (not counting triple nets being a commercial space - where the landlords get a percentage of your gross that gets contributed to upkeep and all), then you have to pay your bouncers, security for parking, bartenders (you have three bars or more), your waitresses, liability insurance, electricity (they have big lighted signs, tons of lights, sound system and so on, not counting payroll taxes and other taxes. They negotiate differently for each band, so what they expect to take in on the weekend differs from weekdays. But I can guarantee, noone's throwing cash up in the air and lighting their cigars from it.

I know, Glen, every time I write, I'm practing how I say things. If just one person will listen, I will have made my point. If not, I still have many other topics to practice my writing on.

I'm about to submit my book again. Gonna try Samhain this time. Then I have one other left. After that, I'm putting it out myself. My story is between a rock and a hard place, it's one of those stories that I think it's too girlie for guys, but too manly for women. That's always been me in a nutshell.

What a conundrum, that sounds interesting. Send Gwen a chapter and I'll read it too. [just to see if you're right] . Funny with music you know if you like it right away, with writing it tends to be a bit more cerebral. You read it, you like it , and then it becomes a part of your thoughts.
Better not let me go on here before I get complaints about non musical posts.

Politics as usual.

I think Cheya, that it also matters what your market is.

In the market I'm aiming at, there is always a place for a *good* band to play. And get paid for it. But in a market aimed at originals, the risk is higher for the bar so they're less likely to pay outright. It's simple, common sense to them.

To some extent there is the "know your market" thing as well.

Hmm. It seems that my reply has been deleted... so I'll say it again -
I was a concert promoter.
I "hired" bands.
It was MY JOB to amass an audience and present them with a good show.
If you were a quality act, I paid you to entertain MY crowd.
It was not the bands responsibility to sell my tickets, it was mine!
If you play a venue you deserve to be paid for it, whether it's your 100th gig, or your first!

If I perform you bet your ass I'm getting paid for not only my performance, but for the decades of heart and soul (and money) that I have invested in that performance.

FUK Clubowners and promotors that want a free ride from performers!!!
If you want a successful club, you provide a quality product for your patrons dollars. If you can't take the time to audition acts and promote your club as a quality venue that provides quality entertainment, then your just a lazy leeching dick that wants a no risk/high profit business...

So go be a whore on the street and leave artists and musicians and their years of dedication and hard work out of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
