I know this is an old post string but it recently occurred to me that I would be remiss did I not follow up to let everyone know how my carpel tunnel in my left wrist was eventually eliminated without surgery. It was bothering me so badly that I thought I would soon have to stop playing. But now it is more than three years later and I play without any pain in my wrist. I am unsure if this will work for others but what I did was find a hand doctor who would continue to give me cortisone injections well after most doctors are calling for surgery. My first two injections were two months apart. Then every three or four months I would get another injection. The last one was at a six month interval and I really did not need it so much. It has been almost a year and I experience no pain, even after a full evening of playing. From all the injections I now have a tiny permanent red mark on the top of my wrist that would indicate to any doctor just where to insert the needle. My fellow musicians joke that what I did was destroy extra tissue with cortisone but who cares, I now play without pain. I love it.

I have both Carpal Tunnel and Arthritis in my left hand
Already had the operation on my right hand years ago... found that doing specific finger exercises and scales, arpeggio's etc on my acoustic every day with a loose grip keeps the pain minimal. ...but... I've been experiencing more pain now within the last month... I'll see how many more years I can take...operations do not correct arthritis! Once I find myself slowing down in the "shredding" dept., I am done!
I actually feel the most pain playin barred chords for long periods of time...

Barre chords cause me some pain as well. My left wrist and thumb have issues. My remedy is BioFreeze (chiropractors sell it) or Freeze which is similar and available in a drug store. I rub it in my skin before I play.
Doan's pills (also called Momentum) which are a back pain remedy can help as well.
I'd never realized how important my thumb was but it's certainly shouting it's existance now!
I'm guessing cortisone shots might help since they do help with back pain. Not everyone responds but the odds are on your side.

And they call these the Golden years. Rusty years is more like it. I have Septic arthritis, Osteoarthritis, and Rheumatoid arthritis in my hands along with OCCASIONAL Carpal Tunnel from time to time.
It all runs heavily in my family so I inherited it. Carpal Tunnel isn't a permanent problem for me at this time but it hurts when it starts up.
I do a lot of finger work to limber up before I can play. When I wake up in the morning my hands are frozen and won't bend on their own. I have to fold one into a fist with the other and lay on it for a while. Then it will close and open. Then I do the same to the other.
Then after some finger gymnastics I'm ready for some finger pickin. Getting old sucks, but the alternative is a tad worse.

Geeze Slack that really sucks. I never realized how many of you players were having these sort of problems. I wish every one the best in dealing with this sort of thing.
The worst I ever had was thirty years ago when I was doing so many boiler jobs and cleaning so many copper fittings with a rotating motion that my forearm actually started to SQUEAK.
I hope you guys are ok, too many of you are really great players and I don't have any solutions. Best , Glen.

Funny how often we say that when in truth, we know after death we will be in our most perfect form with " no more worries or pain ".
About 15 years ago I started getting arthritis in my hands. After a lot of research and ear bending (my wife works with several orthopedic surgeons) I combined regular strengthening exercises, extended rest periods when needed, and started taking glucosamine supplements. This has relieved most of the arthritis symptoms and delayed progression of the disease. Now my hands only bother me when overused by playing too much, playing in the cold, or turning wrenches long hours in the garage.

Heavy guitar practice, the driving a truck, then practice truck cycled back and forth until I got a big goose egg at the base of my wrist on the back of my hand. Didn't change my habits any, but it did get aggravating. A woman at work said her husband got this condition several times. He had an operation, but it came back again. He was also a truck driver. His Dr's next orders were- take the other hand and pound it with his fist.He did that. Took care of it. Obviously, she made that recommendation to me.After a couple of days consideration, I did it. Didn't hurt as bad as I feared, and it reduced the swelling about 80%. About 3 weeks later I did it again, harder! Finished that problem for good and after 3 years hasn't came back!
btw
I forgot to mention apple cider vinegar. An elderly man told me using that (with some honey and water for taste) had cured him of arthritus.
Read up on it and I started taking it as a tonic, had slacked up but started back up today, just in case.
