The reason I come here to vent,...I always receive better feedback with logical understanding at this site. Could be, the patrons here are more mature. ?
I have read a few classified ads mostly on Craigslist stating, "Looking for musicians to write and collaborate with, play music and record. We DO NOT intend to play out. Will NOT be booking any gigs !! This is for FUN ONLY" !!
To me, That ain't fun(.) !!! If that's all I had to look forward to, I'd probably go back to drinkin", chasin' wimmin', maybe cuttin' out paper dolls, playin' cards...........
I am sixty-seven years old, been playing music professionally off and on, for a little over forty-five years.(Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Rock"n"Roll, Traditional Country).
Recently, I have attended (two) different Jam sessions.(neither of which was in an environment meant to entertain the public. As it turned out, there were musicians there that represented, Bluegrass, Country, Rock"n"Roll, Gospel, Folk. They brought all their varied instruments electric as well as, acoustic. Up to, and including a Dulcimer.
In this group of musicians, there was a lot of varied skill, ability, musicianship. It was that every musician with advanced skill, was encouraged to take a lead ride on every song. There-fore every song was atleast 10/12 minutes long.
Summation: If I can't play music with the intent to play out, book gigs, entertain my fellow man.... Then I'll be a hermit, and entertain myself.

Right on. There has to a goal, a point, a direction...something. For me I love the process of creation, yet I also enjoy gigging. But to only play in the basement would be torture.

My sentiments exactly.... If I get something together, once the band has 12 solid songs perfected, I start calling the local clubs to at least do 1 nice set until we have enough to take over the whole night! It usually takes a little less than a month for me to start booking shows if we all start from scratch....If the musicians and I have a lot of songs already in common, I can get us out within 2 weeks!

To each his own - there is a growing community of "musicians" on the internet who enjoy collaborating online because it's possible. Writing new songs with others, then mixing and mastering, is a huge part of the enjoyment for these folks.

If you haven't checked out Kompoz.com, while it may not be your cup-of-tea, you should - just to see a sample of what the Craigs List people are out to accomplish - writing songs.

Not everyone (like myself) is an accomplished musician with love of stage, or the ability or even the time (I'm married with kids in the house, so I can't devote 2 nights a week to gigging - in fact, I can't even practice until the rest of the house is in bed and sleeping). Being able to work with people "after hours" is the bottom line in my case. With others, it's just fun for them to create with someone new. They are more like composers whose desire is to create something that they can say "I took part in this!".

I'm surprised they're on Craigslist looking to collaborate though - there are a lot of sites like the Kompoz they can just sign up for and start collaborating

Craigslist is mostly whack anyway. I posted looking for musicians offering paid work and I didn't get any action. In fact, I didn't get a lot of action online anyway. I thought maybe I'd post of picture of me as a little young white girl, I'd probably get tons of hits.

I have NEVER been able to make a good contact on Craigslist. Perhaps your right about posting as a very young individual.

Yeah, but those hitting on you probably won't be interested in your music.

My goal is to also play out and believe it or not, make good money as a musician. Music in itself is fun, but making it a recreational waste of time is not fun.

I learned to play guitar to accomplish a goal that had nothing to do with playing guitar. After learning a song I just kept playing and forgot about why I began in the first place. I was reluctant to play in a band.
Eventually I did, and I burned out after years of playing every night. I did enjoy it for a while then it got old and I hung it up.

Now, many years later, I am playing again. Not for any other reason other than I love to play my guitar. I love playing music and I love writing it. I didn't like turning what I loved into a job, but I do understand playing on a bandstand as a goal. Since I burned out once, I am not going there again. Playing in front of an appreciative crowd is great. Starting with just an idea and composing, playing and recording that inspiration and hearing it completed on a DAW is also very rewarding.

Whether on a bandstand or not, working with other musicians is a lot of fun. So I understand why some people like Internet collaborations as well as performing in public.

I want to make money from what I write and exposing it to the world
as it developes kinda irks me. I am a very comercial writer and believe
my material is viable. I would Love to be able to do that but cant
bring myself to it.

On Kompoz if you look a little more you will see you can select the degree of your colab. Public or private, Your song will be protected.

Its always fun to dabble in other peoples projects when time permits and you are really boared.

I share this focus with you Slacker. Music and guitar has been the thing that keeps me grounded with myself. It's almost a form of meditation when I practice. Also, I like the creative process of working with other musicians. I feel just as good in a closed-door jam session as performing in front of people. I have volunteered at a local public school to teach guitar to children on the weekends. I want others to find what we have found... A way of self- realization.

How great is it when you are playing your favorite axe in a room all by yourself and all consciousness of the world has drifted away from you, and all you hear is the sound of your guitar doing what you want it to? In those moments all you are aware of is how sweet the sound, and it almost seems as if the instrument is playing itself without any input from you.
I think a lot of musicians know what I am talking about. We all certainly have all been there at one time or another. Its almost like tunnel vision for ears. That's where I want to go every time i pick up my axe.

That is simply the greatest place my guitar and I can go. Then after a while your consciousness drifts back into the real world going on around you and you think wow, how sweet was that? You know what I am talking about.

I love an appreciative crowd as much as any musician, and occasionally I can get to the same place at a jam or with a band when we're all in a groove. But no where near as often. But when it is just my guitar and myself I can get there almost every time I start playing alone in my room.
