So, this bar in Concord got back to me last evening confirming that we're playing there on Feb 19. It promises to be an interesting show. The Time Out Sports Bar in Concord has tended to book thrash metal bands in the past.

We are anything but thrash metal.

I get the sense they're trying to change the scene there and I approve. Still, it's going to be interesting. I plan to have fun regardless, and it has to be better than playing for the crowd who came to watch a hockey game only to have the game turned off so we could play.

Local folk, consider this an invitation. Show starts at 9.

Dude, I fear for your safety. Remember guitars make formidable weapons when necessary.

Do they have chicken wire across the front of the stage? If not, you might want to bring your own.

One of the reviews said that Bourbon Street was gone...AAAHHH! I played that place a couple of times, and saw my friends bands play there. Good sound, good environment. I had planned on playing there in the near future to avoid Time Out.

I have read some of them. But I've also had conversations with the guy who is doing the booking there. He freely admits to being relatively new to the job and is clearly looking to make the place friendly for the clientele he actually wants there.

And, you know, he doesn't yet have the cynical, self-serving, drug-addled attitude that I too often run into in people booking for bars. I've run into people like him in the past and I always find it pleasing to work with them. I've also run into the cynical, self-serving drug-addled types. They're less fun to work with.

I did enjoy how he was surprised to learn that we were happy to do four-hour show in our initial conversation. Most of the bands he'd dealt with before then were limited to 30 minutes. I don't get that. Once I'm on stage, I'm staying there as long as I'm allowed and can stand it.

There is a place in San Jose I played at years ago where I think I'd want chicken wire in front of the stage before I played there again.

The Harley coming through the front door, aimed directly at the stage, while we were packing up...

I don't think it matters too much what genre you play as long as it sounds good and you put ona good show. The very first gig we ever did was as a last minute replacement for a Led Zep tribute band. We played nothing but Chicago and Texas blues, a few rockers thrown in here and there. Held most of the crowd and got many repeat gigs there. I'll bet you do fine and get repeat gigs also...

So, we did the gig.

I think an interesting point was the best compliment we got all night went something like, "Well, people are dancing. Nobody ever dances in here."

It was a good thing we knew a Bon Jovi song. One of the regulars was adamant that we should play some Bon Jovi.

We didn't get paid. We were playing for the door and the sound man gets paid first. After paying him, there was no money for us. Disappointing, but the fact is, people there liked us. There were plenty of people there, but they all showed up before the bar started charging a cover. They stayed and drank and the bar made money. But we didn't.

Ah, well. Maybe next time.
