Some good advice here!

I have to use my digital delay for lead parts. Don't know why that is really, I suppose it's just something I'm drawn to, but don't really need. I would like to try out some more of the more unusual Electro Harmonix effects.

That capo idea is a clever one. Can't say I've ever heard of that method in recording before.

Is there a certain vibe you're going for?

For rhythm, no. For leads, well, some, but I know over-use of any effect(s) can subtract emotion. Any lead I do play is not for very long, and mostly has a rhythm players style all over it. My goal is the element of surprise through sound, rather than trying to awe people with what people call "shredding" today.

Yeah, Dwarfcraft makes good stuff. Electro-Harmonix too.

The Holy Stain is a pretty cool Distortion/Reverb/Pitch/Tremolo Multi-Effect that can go from subtle to "WTF!"

Mine got fried when I used the wrong power adapter.

The H.O.G. is a bit more expensive. But, you can do a lot with it. Unfortunately, I haven't done ANYTHING with it.

K my digital delay modeler pedal I punch in for leads a lot.

The setting I alluded to above, where it is the Old Tape Echo Plex, he he I actually had one of those way back in the 70s. Page used this for a bunch of things and Ive read that Eddie used it for a lot stuff.

Eddie used that Phazer 90 Pedal on the first couple of albums, listen to the chucka chucka part of ATOMIC PUNK from one, a lot of the leads he kicks it in.

Back to the delay pedal. I have the old echoplex set for very very short repeats in fact you cant distiguish them apart, but when you do this on leads if kinda fills it up, then if you get to a long lazy part of a solo you can use the tap tempo switch to lengthen them out longer to say finish a solo. I love that pedal, but i woudl recomend for live performances a pedal with the tap tempo function, cause you can change the lengths of the delays on the fly.

For leads, I mean I use Mesa Amps and the ones I use live have a solo function which basically boosts the volume without changing the tone, I have that at my diposal.

And for leads dont forget about a wha wha pedal, I have a Bad Horsie II, and I will step on i in the middle of a guitar solo to give the guitar more bite or to give it a nasally tone, of course its great for wah functions too, so it is a great lead tool

I also have a old Tube Screamer pedal on my board. Now on my gainy normal channel I dont like it much, but if you have a clean channel, lets see take a song like Simple Man Skynyrd, I use my clean channel for the verse rythym guitar, then when the heave parts come in I punch the TS not the solo amp function or the haevy channel. TS work great on a cleaner channel to me to bring it out, that clean channel and the TS pushed in are great for old CLassis Rock songs, Cant Get Enough, or Early Zep songs

I guess what Im getting at is whatever you have can make a variation in tone to make leads stick out more

Back to the Modeler Pedal I have programmed in there this backward guitar setting, Listen to the solo on RHCP Give IT Away, I can emulate that solo really good live sjut kicking in that backwards setting

Lets see it has 3 setings that you retain, My third setting is a U2 type repeat setting, there again if I use it I can tap the tempo in time with the drummer live and even if we are rushing or slowing a song down I can match the tempo

If you ever look at that delay pedal it has an excellent manual that tell you how to set it for all the classic delay sounds, I spent quite a few hours wiht that pedal finding what worked for me. i highly recomend that pedal to anyone looking far a versatile delay pedal.

They also have distortion modeler, I didnt care for it, and the modulation pedal I didnt like, but they are some great pedals.


As far as all those Electro Harmonix snths pedals and stuff, I wouldnt put one of those in my pedal board, they tend to be more unreliable plus they are more expensive, Im fortunate to have soem friends who own these and I jsut use them for recording, Live Im afraid between my big feet and beer and cigs they wouldnt last long.

On leads use whatever you have to change a freq or soemthing from your rythym sounds, so they jump out at you when you do them

Also dont overuse effects, 80% of the time when I play I dont have any effects on, when I talk on here it sounds like I have them punched in all the time, no I jsut use them to change my tone here and there and make my guitar tones more interesting

K I put this picture of my amps on another thread but it shows my pedal board, the only thing missing in this picture is the whammy pedal, running all these things together I do sacrifice some tone but jsut having the different sounds at my feet is worth the lost tone.

If Im recording a rythym track wiht an amp I jsut run straight into the amp to get rid of the unwanted noise, I n a live situation playing covers for drunks I dont think they know the difference

My current stock of pedals fills an SKB board and two old suitcases. Pedal junkie. Gear junkie. Whatever.

I recently purchased an old Roland SIP-300 preamp and am hoping to get another soon, as well as the Roland SIP 301 preamp. I've got a shopping list going on to get some of the tones I'm after. Ideally, my project won't just have a single "sound", but interweave different contrasts and textures together. But, I know the cost adds up on all this. But, I've got nothing better to do. I sing, play guitar and bass, and my "wife" plays guitar and keyboards. So, it just multiplies everything.

Nice set up JW! My dream is to have a Recto, preferebly a Triple.

If my delay had a tap tempo, then I'm sure I would use it a lot more. Unfortunately, my Boss delay doesen't. Sucks because it has a lot of different settings that I would like to go between. Maybe that's why I feel I don't really need it, because I'm limited to one setting while I play. For the right delay pedal, the money would be worth it. Delay adds mystery to a note.

I wouldn't buy an Electro Harmonix pedal unless I really liked it, plus, it would probably have to be used. Those luxury prices are steep...some over $300 steep. I could get 2 or 3 pedals for that. I like the new Freeze pedal by EH, but I'm not sure how much use it would get. It could be good for rhythm. Definitely an effect that stands out from most.

Yo Shredd, I listened to you guys on Reverbnation the other day. I can't believe how clear the sound is. Plus, the panning and the layering seemed to be in constant motion. Did you guys record at a pro studio, or do you have your own?
