Are you sick of text messages? I've been texting a lot of late. The young guys I've been jamming with are really into texting. Texting is a pain in the ass and it certainly is less effective than talking on the telephone. You can't hear any voice inflection. You can't tell if somebody is being sarcastic (sometimes). You can take something at face value that is meant to be a joke. I think starting tomorrow I'm going on a text strike. Anybody that sends me a text from now on will be texted back: "If you wish to communnicate with me you MUST call me. I am no longer responding to text messages."

I'm kind of a luddite. The only cell phones I ever had were my "wife's" hand-me-downs. The one I still have she gave me before going on an out-of-state trip a couple years ago. I never charge the thing or buy new minutes. I don't like people calling or texting me. I don't even like talking on the phone, PERIOD. She goes everywhere with hers, and gets a text about every 3 minutes. The thing won't shut up. If people want to talk with me they can write a letter. I might write back. I used to have penpals all over the place. But, I've lost touch with almost all of them. Oh, well.

Ya know, Bob, all those issues apply to this forum, too.

There's certain musicians that ALWAYS respond to my musician searches and NEVER call me when requested. One guy in particular sends me text messages and e-mails only. If somebody's afraid to call then what do they do in person? Some people are in their own dream world I guess...

Chat and text are not only impersonal they are a cheat of conversation... they allow you to catch mistakes and edit your own speech. I prefer honest human communication, mistakes and all. That's much of what makes us human and gives us unique personalities. Too easy to be too politically correct and IMHO not an honest representation of ones self.

I don't know. Do I come across as too politically correct?

In person I probably come across more like Rainman. "Yeah, K-Mart sucks. K-Mart definitely sucks. I'm an excellent driver. Yeah."

lol. Well what's in a conversation nowadays anyway?

A typical conversation and how today's diluted mind works:

Bringing evidence of a crime to light has somehow become... something silly and outlandish
Yeah I know what you mean. Like that stuff weirdos talk about. I think they call it conspiracy theory now
Yeah. Stupid weirdos
Yeah for real. weirdos.
so what's on TV?
2 1/2 men
awesome
yeah, the jerk always comes out on top and makes me laugh.
yeah lol. The good guy always struggles and gets screwed and makes me laugh
oh no he don't, he don't get sh*t lol.
lol
you let your kids watch it?
naa, they talk about sex too much
oh yeah. smart. wouldn't want your kids to hear that!

And the poor slobs don't even realize it. They're so dumbed down and indoctrinated that rational thought processes barely even exist for them anymore.

D.A.R.E. to think for yourself

Dare to think!

Texts are better when you're in a restaurant than shouting into your fone & trying to look oh so important. I swear I'm gonna get one o' them aerosol horn-blasters to shut those assholes up.

I threatened to toss some cute lil high school chippy's phone across a movie theater, once. She said I was psychotic. I growled at her in a scary whisper, saying, "You have NO idea!" She moved. I was very happy about that. She went somewhere else with her lil bright distracting screen to annoy someone else, as she texted throughout the movie. I wonder what she texted about me...

Haydn - u FIX ur mistaks?

Mike - I'M the resident LUDDITE here! You cannot usurp my self-proclaimed title! You are Amish, at best...maybe even a mere Mennonite!

I especially like to text when I'm driving.

My wife texts me from work about 10 times a day, but it's rarely important. I REALLY like it when she wants me to text her an entire grocery list. I usually just type out a single word - "STUFF"

My fingers are too damned big to deal with these teensy lil phones. Gimme a phone with a full sized keyboard! My wife's phone actually comes with a lil plastic toothpick to text with! How ridiculous is that?

Brother Eli and I built a ham radio from stone knives and bear skins after the barn raising! After we get back from the three hour tour we're building a nuclear reactor from a couple of coconuts!

I'm a nuts n bolts kind of guy really.

Yet I find text as an excellent method of communication.

My son's at school or band or tennis football orchestra ETC ETC

My wife at work or in patients homes

My band mates at work or at College or at work at College

Me in the hospital setting or playing loud ass guitar perhaps at the range shooting.

Answering a call is not always an option.

Short very concise text are the rule here.

"Dad, pick me up."

"Call when you can"

" No rehearsal tonight"

"I hate my f*#king job !!"

You get the point I'm sure.

No, not as effective a means as interpersonal communication and sometime requires a follow up call.
But definitely serves a purpose.

I made a phone out of a coconut shell and some string. Terrible bandwidth.

I don't really even know how to text. That's the honest truth. If I want to contact you, I'll call. If I want to send you a note, I'll put a stamp on it.

Maybe I'll get with the program one of these days. If I do get into texting, it won't be excessive to the point of getting in a car accident. Hello California!
