During practice I mostly play through existing songs, jam or write. I have long since lost all patience for playing scales or general exercise patterns. Plus if you are practicing actual material your efficiency is higher because you are actively polishing material that you will some day perform and also increasing your general skill simultaneously.
Now as far as covers go my position on them has always been the same. Just say no!
