On my home from work today I drove past a small brush fire.
I turned around to go back and assess the situation and as I stopped another vehicle puled over as well.
There I was in my scrubs and tennis shoes trying to figure out what the hell to do next. The wind was blowing and if I'd just called and waited on the FD the fire would have could have gotten bad.
The young man in the work truck whom stopped with me pulled out an extinguisher and went into the brush to try to contain the fire as I called the FD. He did a good job of containment putting himself at risk for someone's property he did not even know.
As this went on a lot of traffic whizzed by on hwy 31 @ 70mph. And not a damn soul stopped to help.
An old man in scrubs and tennis shoes, I really felt kind of useless.
When the FD showed I shook the young mans hand and thanked him for his help. He got into his truck and headed home as did I.

Thank God there are still a few young men whom care about more than themselves.

In real life though, you gotta wonder... Did those people ever think that it could have easily been THEIR property? Wouldn't they want someone to help them out?

It's not hard to be a light in today's dark world.

There's too many selfish people in the world entertained by the sight of catastrophe.

Too bad there aren't more people like in that commercial (I think for a credit card) where people watch someone help someone else and then go help another person. Y'know? A Pay It Forward kind of thing.

I'm not saying that someone should get in harm's way if it's obviously too dangerous...haha! What irks me are people who stand around or rubberneck when somebody is seriously injured, as to enjoy it. People love real blood.

the vast majority of people today don't give a sh*t about anything but themselves. I witnessed a really bad trafic accident at a very busy intersection. Dozens of people must have seen the wreck as it happened. I was the only one who stopped and waited for the police to arrive to give a witness report. It's conceivable that if I didn't, the guy that got the ticket would have been the wrong guy. It should be EVERYBODY'S CIVIC DUTY TO DO THE RIGHT THING. I asked the cop who showed up how many people stop and give a report, he said very few ever do it. I couldn't believe it...

This is some crazy sh#t dude, an old man's home is allowed to burn down to the ground with his two pets inside coz he dind't pay some bullsh#t $70 fee and we make heroes of some dude trying to put out a small brush fire?

If it's something serious and you don't stop and try to help in some way, you can get in trouble for it

I did the same thing years ago in the Bryan College Station Texas area. On my way home to Caldwell, 30 minutes from Bryan, a small grass fire on the side of Hwy 21. About the size of 3 cars, I stopped and started beating it out with an old towel I happened to have in the truck. Cell phones were rare and very expensive, so no way to call the fire department, I guess someone driving by did.

Some guy around my age stopped and asked if he could help, he had a towel too and we both started working our way downwind, barely staying ahead of the fire. We finally got it put out after around 20 minutes, when the local fire department showed up. The driver got out, said we had it put out, thanked us and they were going to leave. I told him no way, the wind will start it up again in no time, they better hose it down.

No, it's out he said...and started to leave. About the time he closed the truck door, it sprang up again and I yelled GET YOUR ASS BACK OUT HERE...they finally decided to get out the hoses...

I greatly appreciated the help of the one guy who stopped, bought him a beer later. But I was appalled at the apathy of the fire dept guys. He should have known the wind would start it up again, you NEVER, EVER leave a fire until you wet it down. Period...Idiots...

George, I'm glad you did the right thing, very few people would, as you saw. Only one stopped when I did it, in 1980...

We had a major fire at a golf course clubhouse a few days ago. It was one built in the 1920's, a rather historic place. Apparently roofers with a bunsen burner started a small fire on the roof and thought they had put it out. They didn't call the fire department. It was very windy that day and HOURS later the huge fire erupted. No matter how small a fire is or even if you think the fire is out ALWAYS call the fire dept and insist they scope out the area with a heat sensor. They can detect the smallest pockets of smoldering debris and make sure the fire IS out. Make sure they do their job.
