On the other side of the coin - as our education system continues to fail us, our standards continue to drop in everything from our politicians to our foods to our music appreciation.

Surely SOMEONE likes the tripe that's out there, or it wouldn't be sold. As Guitar Hero & garageband & other sh*t of that ilk keep developing & evolving, ppl will continue to put out more & more tripe, which will be eaten up by the masses who are STARVING for anything entertaining.

Sure, there are many kids who prefer older music, but there are also a helluva lot who are accepting it, & their numbers are growing.

I don't wanna be a messenger of doom, but I predict that there will continue to be this dumbing down of everything, until we really ARE "equal in all things" - the ultimate goal of the humanists.

I do not believe the human spirit is conquerable.
Perhaps in the masses. But not in mass.

I respect your positive attitude but totally reject your premise.

That's funny - I hear a lot of inexperienced children in bands on TV, and I think they're way too young (and inexperienced) to hold my interest.
It takes a whooooole lot more than enthusiasm (and mugging pretty face for the camera) to impress me.
:)
But - that's ok.
Because they are not trying to impress me.
And - neither are the guys with tons of expereince trying to impress the children - we don't have to.
.
Guess it's a 2 way street.
.
But - it's all good with me.
.
They play the stuff they like to hear, and we play the stuff we like to hear.

Thank you! You've just confirmed how I've been feeling for years.

The only people that are older than me who have looked down on my playing as childish, seem to be folks who have been brainwashed before this generation. But I know the musician's code: if they never had anything to do with being a musician in the industry at all, then they have no say...something like that.

I'm afraid I'm seeing these square, uptight, straight-laced parents trying to steer their children away from being musicians at all. I've been told by my nephew that I have the reputation as a bad influence. Well, geez, excuse me for not trying to crush anyone's dreams.

KLUGMO wrote:This is a great subject kru. I am getting involved with a band
of 6 that the youngest is 40. I am 53 and can still sing and write
my ass off. This venture feels just as exciting as when I was
younger and involved in bands. In fact more so because I believe
in the quality of the people I will work with and I believe they
believe in me and feel they are not wasting time.
It's never too late to make music. If it's quality it stands up.
If it doesn't, just work harder and think out of the box.
I believe there are sooo many very talented people out there
that feel they are too old to make meaningful music anymore.
It's simply not true. All that is needed is the energy and to
believe in yourself.
So you guys like me that have a few years on you should pick up the
paper or the phone or the computer or go to a open mike,
whatever it takes to connect with other music makers and dammit
just make it happen.

Playing alone in your house is not where you belong.

I found your post very encouraging KLUGMO. :) There's a lot of things you said that I needed to hear.

Yep ...

Our band ranges from late 20's to late 50's.
Hell just look at our photos or videos.
Does this look like a bunch of guys whom would play together ??

Nuff said.

Here is my experience for what it's worth.
I'll be 63 in Jan.
I started playing when I was 19.
Once I started playing I never stopped.
I never played in a band,I just kept honing my playing.
When one of my daughters came of age I encouraged her to sing so I could play.
I eventually started writing, done some recordings for me and my family.
Then I retired from work,I found this site and soon after I got an e-mail from a guy that wanted to possibly start an acoustic group and asked if I would like to give it a try.
I met with him and a singer about twice now.
This is my 1st anything collectively done and it excited the hell out of me.
I would love to just once in front of an audience, still not giving up.
I want to tell you that because of this site I was able to post my my songs, gotten feedback, enjoyed good general chat and got a contact to join in a possible group.
That's it."and so it goes"

I'll take my chances with that Kru.
It's in my blood I might as well keep trying until the blood spills.
Do appreciate you caring for my well being.
Just to let everyone out there know:Ready, willing and able.
I love being years old and heart young,It's a nice balance in life.
