Had some nice comments about my music from a fellow musician here in Jax, FL and went to check out his own stuff afterward. They have an interesting cover of The Allman Brother's "Whipping Post" a nice heavy version! I liked it! Lots of interesting changes and stops in it too. I thought it was worth a listen, so I am sharing the link:

Didn't expect everyone to like it, for sure! What I LOVE though, is when bands make covers THEIR OWN! This was a unique take on the song, and I appreciated it for that.

Absolutely, I prefer the old version BUT this cover is fresh and if you didn't know the song, it would sound original.

This one falls under the category of”If it ain’t broken don’t fix it”

I just posted this as an example of taking a cover and making it uniquely yours. I certainly never intended for anyone to believe I thought it was better than the original. God forbid! I should be struck by lightning if that were the case! LOL

Very difficult song to not compare to the original for myself as it has held some personal feelings for me in the past.

Yeah Bob, everyone seems to be missing the point. It was NOT done as a Blues/Rock song. It was done in a completely different style. Tori Amos covered Nirvana's "Smell's Like Teen Spirit" which is a hard alternative song, but she did it melodically and slow on piano. Her version was COMPLETELY different, and traditionalists would not appreciate it for what it was. I did though. Didn't mean I didn't still like Nirvana's ORIGINAL version. Didn't mean I liked Tori Amos cover better. Just meant I appreciated BOTH for what they were. Tori Amos' version was NOT better, and it will NOT become a classic, and it will NOT sell untold millions of CD's internationally! It was just a DIFFERENT TAKE on an Alternative/Rock classic, and it was cool to hear a new take on an old song!

Hey I liked it Craig. Like Blue Cheer does Allman Bros. We all easily fall into the rut of trying to "reproduce" the original track when playing covers and I think it is a bit lame. I love it when a band puts their own stamp on a song. Not ready to toss out my Allman Bros vinyl just yet though.

Would I change anything if I were producing behind the console? Yes. The heavy groove is what makes this arrangement work so I would bring out the grove and strip away some of the vocal and guitar effects that sometimes get in the way. Wall of sound is good. Wall of disconnected effects, not good.

This reminds me of years ago, we were listeing to some Christmas music that was jazzed up. Now it didn't have the "traditional" sound and my mother-in-law couldn't understand why there was a need to "improve " God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. What she failed to understand was the purpose of the change was not to improve upon her beloved melody. All it was was a demonstration of the performer's imagination. It wasn't broken and it surely didn't need to be fixed. But the arrangement was just another point of view.
