I love a lot of Neal Schons guitar tones!

And if you measure success in sales volume then they are big time

Anyone remember that Hagar and Schon collaboration. I used to jam to that one, I think it was HAAS or something like that. I havent heard the original Journey album in years!

John I presume you have the third Santana album. I believe Schon was 17 when he played on it. Santana took him in off the streets and made him part of the band. This was also my first concert - Sept.25, 1971.

If anyone thought I was taking a sh*t on Journey, I surely wasn't. I'm not even a vocalist...or Neil Schon.

I'm even better! J/k  :P

neanderpaul wrote:Perry is a solid vocalist with a crazy good range. The songs appeal to the masses because they are solid songs. Cheese? maybe. Hip? No chance. Steve was quoted as saying he never felt he was "part of the band" The band was quoted as saying "what is he talking about?!" I think he might be crazy from too much big league success or maybe he was born that way. What do I know though. I know "wheel in the sky" is a great song.

Prolly get a lot o coke up a nose like that too.

Hey Guys I know we all have our preferences when it comes to music. Hey beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
I think if Journey were to ever except Steve Perry back he should have to eat some HUMBLE PIE! Lets face it folks when that voice joined that band it pushed them into superstardom they ALL made a lot of moolah after that and I have a VERY hard time believing it was just STEVE. I saw that same behind the seens Jimmy!
If however Journey were to have him back I would believe the stars have aligned and GOOD music was back Oh How I Wished It Would!

Oh and I don't care what you say NONE of those singers have EVER been as good as STEVE PERRY! Arnell Pineda! don't get me wrong I love the Cinderella story. He's closer than any have been but still NO CIGAR! 8)

Well, the label insisted they replace their original singer. They kinda FORCED Steve Perry on them. It wasn't a creative decision on the band's part. Also, they went into oblivion when he went solo.

So, it could be argued that, yeah, Journey's success boiled down to mostly just him. When a successful band replaces its vocalist it drastically changes the character of the band. Usually, for the worst.

Mike The best I remember It was there MANAGER that wanted them to hire Steve! Yes I am sure that led to some animosity but in the words Of the band They liked it when the audiance started turning from guys to girls I mean they said they REALLY liked it and they all especially liked making the money! I think the guy had a huge head. I beleive however that it was a team effort (both good and bad) and that is exactally why JOURNEY is still MAKING money and Steve actually might want back in!

May be the same reason David Lee Roth and not Gary Cherone is singing with Van Halen. :D

Jimmy isnt Schon on the Woodstock version of Santana.

Schon is a very underrated guitar player.

Personally I dont like Steve Perrys vocals, I like Chris Cornell, of course Robert Plant, Dio, Dickinson, Bon Scott. For me and this is just my take Perry is kinda teeny bopper sounding. But thats just my point of view. They had a ton of memorable tunes. It may be a wimpy song in some way but Lights to me is a killer song, and a great Schon solo.

That being said I never bought any of their big hit albums, heck you didnt have to cause it was all over the radio!

No John I don't believe he was in the band until 1971. I know Santana took him in for a couple of years after Woodstock.

The story I heard on Perry joining the band was that the record label wanted better vocals in the band so they hired Perry as a vocal coach. After working with him for a while they just said "hey why don't you be the vocalist" and he accepted.

You won't hear me say it very often but he sings out of my range. That is I can hit all the notes without falsetto. But they don't sound pretty. I use it as an exercise. When I am ALONE! Sort of like swiging 3 bats. When you put the 2 extra down its easier to swing 1.

Any reunion would see a different sound.
His vox just isn't what it was.. naturally.

I think Steve was one of the best in the bidness...

It's interesting to watch that multi-part youtube of the bands history.
Much gets answered in them.
